Description
This is my first real project for my animation class and my first real character animation ever! Pretty exciting for somebody who's wanted to be an animator for years.
I had to submit a silent version so as not to violate dA's copyright policy, but I HIGHLY recommend viewing the musical version found here.
I know there are plenty of things that need work but there are a lot of things I'm quite proud of too.

The song is called "Lifeboat (Lovers' Rock)" and it's by Penguin Cafe. The full version was way cooler before I cut it up.

I love Penguin Cafe Orchestra! You should check out the song "perpetuum mobile" if you haven't heard it already. It's one of my favourites.

Oh yes! I have that one on the same CD. Penguin Cafe was my first real big musical obsession... when I first got that CD in 6th grade I listened to it nonstop.

so did you use a mixture of puppet and drawn animation? and did you use after effects to compile it?

Yes, it's mostly computer animation, with all the parts on different layers, and a few small frame-by-frame sequences, like their expressions and the part where she looks around at the bucket. And I used AE7 to compile everything and do all the 'puppet' animation.

coolness. doing the expressions like you explain sounds like a fun and simple way to use AE. i'll have to try that.

Haha I love how this looks like the pages of a storybook come to life. You did a great job! I hope I get a chance to do this someday.
I'm curious as to why the animation looks blurry when the girl sighs. Maybe it's just my computer or my eyes playing tricks on me but it looks blurred. Movement looks nice though.

The 'animation' when she sighs is really just two frames that fade from one to the other, so that's probably why it looks blurry.

when she was coming up with her new bucket, i was just thinking 'eh.. i liked her old one better' to find that its not as good as the older one XD

The animation is absolutely amazing as is the art as ever. lol I think imperfections give character but only as CONSTRUCTIVE critisism i noticed that when she kicks the bucket out the house it goes behind one of the layers. I don't think it's a bad thing though. It shows that an actual human can gain the skill to animate as well as thet. lol. Brilliant. If you made a series I'd definately buy it... when i get a credit card.

Oh my goodness, it totally does! I can't believe I didn't notice that, and I think it might have been something that happened when I compressed it, because I don't think there even should have been a layer there for it to go behind.

lol. I wouldn't have noticed but my computer is really slow and so it played it reeeaaally slowly before it played it through fluently. It is really good though. Seriously good.
