Description
Although there were no windows for the suns first rays shine through, the young female Hedgehog new that it was the start of a new day. It's nice to feel refreshed after having a great night sleep; that's the way Casey felt right now. She was pretty happy that she didn't have any more nightmares, too.
The rooms in GUN's headquarters weren't as homely as other rooms you'd see. Like from what was said before about having no windows in the room. You tend to get used to it though. Casey did for the 5 years of her life so far, and so did everyone else that lived in the rooms there. It could get pretty noisy, taking in mind that it was a military headquarters. For the important members of GUN like Shadow, Rouge & OMEGA, you'd need them as close to the headquarters as possible if anything were to go wrong. As for Casey, well...As a 5 year old, she wasn't very useful. The things that were helpful though was the fact that she was fast. Very fast. That and the fact that she was pretty small, so it would be pretty easy for her to sneak. Shadow would never allow her to do such things though. It would be to dangerous. She was only an infant after all.

It was 8:00am, and the small red Hedgehog had just woke up from her sleep. A very nice, long sleep. She took her arms out from under the soft sheets of her bed and stretched them above her head, along with stretching her legs with a loud yawn escaping her dry lips. Casey then began to wipe her eyes, and lift her upper body to sit up in her bed. The good thing about living in a headquarters, was that a lot of interesting stuff went on; and she didn't want to miss a thing! Casey quickly shot out of her bed to fresh herself up. She brushed her teeth, got herself dressed in a lovely blue dress and shoes, brushed her messy hair and...Tada! She was ready in no time. Casey ran to her room door, pushed the button next to it and watched it quickly open. It opened up to Shadow, who was walking down the hallway at the time. He looked...Miserable. Depressed, even. This was one of the worst moods Casey had witnessed from him in a long time. She couldn't help but notice that Shadow was carrying the most beautiful white Roses, clenched in his huge gloved hands.

"Shadow, where are you going?" Casey's voice spoke up. Shadow immediately stopped, not even turning around to her.

"..I will be visiting an old friend today. You will stay here." Shadow replied in the most darkest tone of voice. He sounded very upset..

"Why? Can't I come too?"

"No." Shadow snapped.

At this stage, Casey new something was wrong. She knew exactly what was happening; it happens every year, on this exact date. She would never be aloud to go with him. He'd always refuse; but she wanted to make sure he'd be ok.

"..It's about Maria, isn't it?.." Casey quietly spoke, trying to speak in a calm tone so that maybe Shadow would calm down.

Shadow didn't reply. He simply turned his head to face her.

"..Please can I come? I promise I won't bother you, it'll be like...Like I'm not even here!" Casey pleaded. She wanted to see were Shadow went on this day. He went to see Maria, at least that's what he'd tell her. Today was the day Maria passed away, so Shadow was always very upset on this day.

A long, rough sigh escaped him as he thought about what she said. After a few moments he finally turned to face her, the white Roses still clenched in his fist.

"..Fine. Come along. I am in no mood for talking, so it would be best to not look for a conversation from me." Shadow replied. He sounded tired, and looked it too. It was as if he had stayed up all night.

"Thanks, Shadow!" Casey smiled, walking further towards him.

"..How...Are we going to get to...Uh, where we're going?.." She curiously asked. As Shadow said; he wasn't in the mood for talking, so he simply took out the green Chaos Emerald he usually always had. Casey knew now exactly how they'd get there.

Shadow stood closer to Casey, making sure she would be coming along with him rather than be left behind.

"CHAOS CONTROL!"

For a split second, they were surrounded by light; the next, it looked as if they were Chaos Controlled to a beautiful place with lush green grass expanding for miles and miles. It was as if they were in the middle of no where! A planet of grass and hills...

But they weren't on a different planet. The light breeze blew past them as they stood on a lonely cliff overlooking the beautiful grass that grew for miles. A beautiful blossom tree stood in the middle of the grassy peak that was held up at the top of the cliff. Shadow and Casey had appeared under the blossom tree after Shadow had used Chaos Control to get them there. Not far in front of them, near the end of the peak, there was a stone. Not an ordinary stone, but a Grave Stone. It was made from White Marble, and had beautiful curled writing that wrote "Maria Robotnik". Casey couldn't help but think to herself; "..Was this were Maria was buried?"

Casey stood quietly as Shadow approached the Grave stone, placing the white Roses into a pretty vase which sat alongside the Grave Stone. The bottom of the vase was stuck into the ground to prevent it from blowing away.

The black and red Hedgehog then stood back a little to look at the stone. He stood there, silent. Casey didn't really know what to do, or say. She walked forward to stand beside the other Hedgehog, not really being talkative either.

Shadow had told Casey about Maria, and how she died. She kind of figured that the reason Shadow didn't seem happy all the time, is because she left. Casey knew that Shadow was suffering inside, he just put on a brave face because he didn't want people to see him cry. Shadow was the mysterious tough Hedgehog, and he wanted people to think of him like that, not the poor lonely Hedgehog that lost his friend.

"..She was too young." Shadow muttered.

"Twelve years old...She didn't need to die. All she ever wanted to do is visit Earth...I couldn't even make her wish come true before she died.."

Casey looked up to the red and black Hedgehog. She could tell by his voice that he was holding back tears, but he was pretty good at it. This might have been the reason Shadow never took Casey before.

Unable to bare any more guilt from what happened to her, Shadow slowly turned around to walk past the Blossom Tree and walk the pain off. His face was burning from holding the tears back, and he needed to take his mind away from it.

As Shadow took the time to try and pull himself together, Casey watched him walk away, but then quickly turned back to Maria's grave stone. After Shadow was far enough not to hear her, she slowly knelt down on her two knees in front of the Grave Stone.

"Hi Maria." Casey spoke quietly.

"I wish I could have met you. You seemed really nice....I wish you were here. Because I know that before you went away...Shadow was happier. He deserves to be happy...But don't worry. I know that I could never, ever, ever, ever take your place, but I promise; I'll try to make Shadow happy, just as happy as you made him!" She smiled, her hands placed by her side while she sat in front of Maria's Grave Stone.

"I'll look after him, don't worry Maria. I can't wait to meet you, and when we do; You, me and Shadow can be a happy family!"

A few minutes later, Shadow's voice could be heard from the distance.

"Casey, we're leaving."

"I gotta' go. Bye Maria." And with that, Casey kissed the top of Maria's Grave stone and ran off.

"Wait for me!" She shouted as she ran down the hill to catch up with Shadow.

When Shadow had used Chaos Control to take them back to the Headquarters, he made his way towards his room. Casey walked him further down the hall from her room, trying to make sure that he was all right.

"Are you ok, Shadow?"

"I...Need time. Leave me be." He quickly replied, pushing the button on the wall next to his room door only to see it open so that he could enter his room, leaving Casey outside in the hallway. She was thinking; how could she cheer him up?...Aha! She got it! As fast as she could she ran to her room, pulled out a piece of blank paper, crayons and began to draw at the table near her bed.

Later that day, Casey began to walk down the hallway towards Shadow's room with a piece of paper in her hand. She had drew something for him in hope that the picture would be able to cheer him up.

When she reached his room, she pushed the button beside the door to make it open, entering Shadow's room as if she was in a rush. She really wasn't expecting what she saw next..

Shadow quickly stood up from his bed, placing the picture of Maria and Gerald he had back on the drawers it would usually sit on. That wasn't what surprised her though. His face was red, and tears were visible streaming down his cheeks. As soon as he noticed this himself, he wiped them away.

"..You shouldn't barge in here like that." The black and red Hedgehog muttered, still noticeably not in the mood for conversation.

"I...I know. I'm sorry...B-but I have something I drew for you."

Casey walked towards Shadow, handing the drawing she made to him. It was a picture of him, with Casey and Maria beside him. They where on Earth, which was Maria's dream. What stood out though was what Casey wrote a the bottom of the drawing, "Be Happy".

He didn't know how to respond. Shadow looked surprised, it could be seen with the expression he had on his face. Why would she do this for him? It was now that Casey started to speak.

"I made a promise to Maria, y'know. At her Grave Stone. I promised her that I would try to make you just as happy as she made you. I know you weren't always like this, but don't worry! Because when we meet Maria again, you'll be happy again, and when you're happy; I'm happy! But until then, I'll make you happy and look after you. We will meet her one day, but if I meet her before you do I'll tell her all about what you did to help me when I was just a baby, and she'll be really proud of you, I just know it!." Casey smiled brightly towards the other Hedgehog.

"And I already know she'll be really proud of you already."

Shadow's expression right now looked...Even more surprised than before. For her to do that...To promise that she'd look after him, even though she was just an infant...And what she said about if she met Maria before he did...What did she mean by that? If it was what he thought she meant...No. Not again. He wouldn't lose anyone else. Even though he didn't age and would witness many people pass away, including Casey, he would make sure that is was not before her time.

Shadow knelt down on both knees. He honestly didn't know what to say, or do. The things that were said really got to him. It drove him to display motions that he had never done before. He leaned forward and wrapped his arms around Casey, leaving her startled by his actions. Shadow couldn't hold the tears back any more, but at least Casey couldn't see them from the embrace he pulled her in.

"..Casey...If anything, I will be looking after you. I refuse to lose anyone else...I will not lose anyone else...I will not lose you."
