Description
After getting a lot of requests for "What color is that thing?" I decided to put together complete color guides for the new My Little Pony TV show characters. They're intended for informational purposes only and are produced independently. In many cases the swatches are researched from the official artwork, in others I used some analysis and my swatch libraries to get within a reasonable Delta-E.The intent of using a standard color library (Pantone Solid Coated) is to stay within the bounds of said official artwork, plus give some consistency to colors used. This should help when sourcing supplies for non-digital work. If your application does not support color libraries, then using the eyedropper on the swatch should give you an answer. However, this means you lose the more accurate simulations available by using Overprint preview mode.
Remember to download the attached PDF file and use that for reference. Do not use the preview PNG for reference material, it's intended only for preview on DeviantArt.
This guide discusses a complete color palette for Princess Celestia. I've assembled the guide based on official artwork, my pile of color books, and a spectrophotometer. These colors are from official print artwork, which differs slightly from the show. They will be easier to reproduce across multiple media and more in line with the FiM merch. Show Celestia has a much more vibrant mane that probably doesn't print very well. I'll probably produce a more show-like palette some other time.
This guide is not affiliated with Hasbro in any way and is produced solely in the interest of color science. For a changelog, more long-winded explanations, and other discussions, see this forum topic: [link]

Oh no, I meant why not use the picture similar to the one on the site instead of this one which seems almost like a child version of her. It does indeed seem that she's pale pink! I still hate that her official toy is like SUPER pink. :c

The primary reason was that this one was complete and not hacked to bits. Some of the artwork had parts clipped off and I didn't want to use them in that state.
The situation's changed a bit now but back then it's what I had to work with.

Aaahhh, I see. That makes sense. Since the girls are so small compared to the princess.

Hair needs more colors.
I think Studio B needs to add about 24 colors to her mane. Just to troll the artists.

well, the beauty is, since her hair consists of several gradients, it really is composed of thousands of colors.
They're Postscript level 3 shfills, which means there's 1024 total gray values for each color component. If I felt like getting the calculator out I could tell you exactly how many colors were in there.

I'm certain your references have been useful to anyone who has attempted to draw the ponies! It's just like taking a reference photo and using the eyedropper to pick colors, but this one is a more straight forward, as official photos and screenshots use gradients, which can through off the palette a little bit.

Well, this one does have gradients, I just separated out the ramps.
Princess Celestia's promo artwork is slightly different than the show's, most likely because it would print better than what's on TV. But, for the most part, they're in the same ballpark.

Yeah that's what I meant. Like if you're trying to pick the colors from official work they're not separate, so you can get a shade that's not quite right.

See, this is the thing, the way her hair is coloured, in all fan art i see has pink on top, when it is pink on bottom.
Great guide, thank you.

Depends on the shot. The artwork mane doesn't match up properly with the show mane.
