Description New and improved!

All of the color guides are getting a revamp. The guides are all now two pages, one for digital applications (such as vectors, painting in Photoshop, 3D modeling, etc) and the other for print applications (customs, merch, T-shirts, et cetera). The PNG preview for the digital guide should be OK to use as well, so the PDF is optional.

If you use Google Chrome or Safari, they will attempt to open the file in-line with Google Docs PDF viewer. DO NOT EYEDROP THOSE COLORS. SAVE THE PDF FILE. The Google Docs viewer displays in a very low bit depth that results in dithering of the colors. Until Deviantart gives me a way to disable this, you should use the download file link to view the guide!

They are also now more space efficient, and will be able to scale better with ponies that have more colors than normal.

The Digital guides aim to be as close to the show as possible, while the print guides aim to be as close to official merch as possible. When there's no merch of that pony (e.g. background ponies) then the print colors will be based on my conversions which will aim to reproduce the show without looking too weird or have obvious gamut problems.

It is safe to eyedrop the digital colors or use the hex/RGB codes - the swatches should match up just fine. Just make sure you're working in sRGB color mode.

For the merch guides, the spot colors are rendered using CMYK alternate color space. This is based on my own examinations of the merch boxes, where the spot colors are simulated straight to process anyway.

I'm confused on the eye gradient... why 3?

kefkafloyd In reply to GhiaccioCubo [2013-09-30 11:31:39 +0000 UTC]

Because it blends between three different colors. It's entirely possible to have a gradient of more than three colors.

Thank you for each and every one of these! Makes my drawings about 20% more accurate (hurrhurroverusedjokeshurr).

Do you ever plan on doing one for Spitfire or Soarin'? I noticed you have a few prominent background ponies (andIwannadoaSpitfiredrawing) so I couldn't help but wonder .

I am having trouble with PS CS5 and your guides and I dont know what i am doing wrong.
When opening your guide in PS CS5 and using the eyedropper tool in the boxes the actual Pantone color i get is way off.
Take Body Fill as an example, the guide calls for Pantone 100C but when i use the eyedropper tool on the box i get Pantone 393C so its alot paler then the original color. If you look at my Fluttershy on my DA page you'll see it easily.
I know i am doing something wrong but i have no idea what. I dont need to use the eyedropper tool to save a few seconds i can use the list and select the correct color using the Pantone numbers but i have no idea how to produce the color 70% Pantone 103 C for body stroke as i have no idea what the 70% means, or how to actually "find" it in PS CS5. Can you help?

kefkafloyd In reply to ExiBrony [2012-03-22 20:32:27 +0000 UTC]

Make sure when you open up the file that you set the color mode to RGB and that your Photoshop's color setup is set to sRGB as the default RGB source profile.

Eyedropping the swatch may not give you the exact thing in the color book in PS (in which case you just pick the name from the color book) due to a various amount of long winded issues. Eyedropping should be for getting RGB values only.

So "Working Space" Color settings in Photoshop should be set to sRGB and not Adobe RGB (1998)?
When i open up the PDF file with Photoshop i get a pop-up where i am able to change image size, resolution, color mode and color depth. The default settings are, 300pixles/inch, RGB and 8bit. In the "Import PDF" pop-up i cannot select sRGB anywhere.

But if im unable to fix this i can still use the numbers to get the correct color. But my question is what does the 70% mean, is it tint or something?

kefkafloyd In reply to ExiBrony [2012-03-22 22:35:48 +0000 UTC]

It means a tint.

And yes, you should be using sRGB and not Adobe RGB.

ExiBrony In reply to kefkafloyd [2012-03-22 22:55:02 +0000 UTC]

Considering i started the project in Adobe RGB 1998 does it mean that i have to start a new one to see the change?

Thanks for your help Kefka

Welcome to the wild and crazy world of color management.

The thing to do is to change to sRGB temporarily, then open up and rasterize the PDF, then use Convert to Profile to Adobe RGB using Relative Colorimetric. Then eye drop off the swatches (don't use the Pantone library in PS).
