This was a fun piece to make. Most of it was done in Photoshop. For the background, I took some cellphone footage I'd recorded of fireworks going off over the bay and enhanced the intensity of the light, to give the appearance of explosions and fire. Embers and more smoke were painted in. While I tend to sketch things out on paper, I ended up painting the robot right into the image without any reference. Since you could only see his shape, this made it easier.
