Description
Category: Still LifeAccording to the calendar, the spring season was supposed to start today, so I went to a nearby beach to see if I could find any sign of spring. I didn't have much luck since most of the ground was still covered in snow and ice, but just as I was about to leave, I spotted this colourful little seashell embedded in a chunk of ice. I carefully dug it out and took it home for a closer study through the macro lens. And here it is. The diameter is only 15mm (0,6 inch), so it's quite a tiny piece of shell.

Nice shot, Keld!
I'm surprised to read that spring season starts today in the calendar. Isn't SPRING EQUINOX on March 20, 2011?

Thanks, Cecily
I had to look it up and it seems you're right. It's only that we use to call March, April and May for the Spring season here, and sometimes March Equinox for mid-spring. The same goes for Summer Solstice (June 21) which we call mid-summer, but perhaps it's because we hope the warm weather will start a little earlier this way

Sadly, our spring usually comes much later than Spring Equinox. The landscape is still covered in snow and ice most of March. People here are advised not to plant anything before the Memorial Day (end of May). I'm fine with it though, because I have less chores to attend to before the growing season.

Hopefully your summer lasts a little longer then. When we reach September here, it's usually time to put a warm sweater on

Our September's temperature fluctuates a lot, often cool with occasional Indian summer! Our fall starts from September, leaving us only June to August as the growing season. During the growing season, I often struggle between spending time in the water and my house/yard cleaning chores.
