The swordsmen of the world protect the people on behalf of the Goddess. There are three classes of swordsmen within the caste. The garrison swordsmen are hired by temples, cities or smaller communities that can afford them to police and protect. Even estates may hire one or two swordsmen for security. River Rats sail on the ships of the river. Not every ship will have a swordsman and generally be a family member of the sailors and traders of that ship. To many, Free Swords are the most romantic of the caste. Free Swords take pride in their poverty. Their kilts will be faded and patched, their harness well warn. The only item of value being their swords. Most shunning payment of coin, they roam the world looking for injustices to confront. For their service the expect to be fed, given a place to sleep and if there is a willing woman, someone to sleep with. Like in many things there are the corrupted.

Pippen, shepherd of the forth level had a hard but satisfying life that he shared with his wife Claris, weaver of the forth level. Pippen had two daughters still living with them in the small stone croft rented to them by the estate owner. Cee'Cee had entered her mothers caste five summers before and is now a weaver of the third. Little Pollis had just received her white after entering her grandmothers caste becoming a seamstress of the first level. Tending his sheep on the high pasture Pippen saw a ship sailing toward the small jetty on the river. No ship ever docked at this jetty. The estates much larger dock was further up stream. Only barges tied up here once a year to bring sheep to market. Looking to his flock Pippen felt a cold wing blow. Abandoning his charges he took off home for on the run. Even then, with the steep slopes it would take him 20 minutes.
