Description
A piece for Mother's day.Tumblr [link]
I've been drawing Avatar fanarts for a year and Azula is obviously the one I draw most. I was asked if Azula is my favorite character. NO, she's not. She's not my favorite character, she's like my daughter. That means even if she is such a negative and aggressive figure, but even though I can't appreciate her actions, I still love her.
I thought I would never do Ursa with Azula arts, 'cuz I thought that Ursa didn't love Azula in the first place, but now I think I can understand Ursa's feeling as a mother. It's never imaginable for a mother to not love her child, and what had happened between them is still unclear.
I really cried when I was drawing this, so much emotion flowed forth that I could barely carry on. I put all I've felt and understood here, hope it can translate to you.
I'm not going to finish this piece, unless something like this really happened in the show.

This is indeed touching and beautiful. You don't need to do nothing more with it...no need to "finish" it. It's complete and it's wonderful. Marvelous job.

Of course she loves her. I mean, would you go through the struggle and pain of creating a marvelous work of art for 9 months and then just shrug it off?

sorry for didn't make myself clear.
I know "Ursa loves Azula" at first place, but that was just an opinion or point of view, nothing matter with emotional/feeling aspect. Like we all know if you hand be cut, it's a huge pain, but you'll never understand how painful it is, unless you experience once (of cause no one wish this kinda thing happen)
what I meant by "understand her feeling", is refer to physical experience, not just a subjective opinion. you said "Of course she loves her. " but can you really physically feel the heardbroken pain and sadness inside Ursa? After spend this long period drawing Azula, I can feel that now. Sometimes, time is needed to transmit knowledge to experience or real feeling/emotion.

Are you taking what I said seriously?
It pretty much goes without saying that Ursa loved her daughter but was heartbroken by her corruption.
But that pain is only caused by her frail and weak human form, and so is yours. I will not be the victim of any human flaw, so i stand alone.

Nop, I m not argueing any thing, just simply answer your question that why it took me so long to reach this conclusion, and what dose "understand ursa's feeling". If the answer didn't satisfy you, I'm sorry, just forget it. Other opinions and thoughts really open to you.

"And what dose "understand ursa's feeling"."
"Other opinions and thoughts really open to you."
Excuse me, could you rephrase that?

sorry, my English is sucks and I don't know how to rephrase it, I've done all I can to explain it, if you still haven't got what I mean, just forgot it.
Actually I still can't find the point of this conversation, could you make it simplier if you want to tell me anything? again, sorry, I'm not good at reading meanings between the lines (in English).
if you like my art, simply tell me what you like about it, I'll give thanks,
if you dislike it, tell me which part make you upset I'll pay attention next time and give thanks as well;
if you don't agree with what I've said in the discription, I'm pretty flaxible with different opinions as long as it doesnt disdurb others, but sorry for can't guarantee replies if I don't know what to say.
if you want to argue or make debat with me, sorry, you just find the laziest people of doing these sort of things in dA.

I was just wondering; considering the amount of emotions that went into this, what emotions and understandings was it, and how do you interpret Ursa's emotions for her daughter?
That's all.

kelly1412 In reply to Somnium-23 [2012-05-17 02:34:07 +0000 UTC]
ok i c, see if this can answer you. It's only about ursa's part.
according to what showed on atla, Ursa dose seems love Zuko more than Azula.
But as a mother, she should have love both child equally at the beginning. However she's not only a mother but also a queen, so she got lots more to consider and bear, royality is all about inheritance and power, I believe she tried to portect both children, but sadly Azula followed her father and become a sacrify of power, watching her twist is a huge pain, but she can do nothing about, it's the fate of being a member of royal family. so I assumpt ursa's emotion towards her daughter is heartbroken, depressed, regartful, painful but after all, still loves her.
sorry for my expression, I don't know if i'm understood, I'm really bad at describing such things, anyway, I put everything I want to express in my art works, so maybe it's better just feel from the image.

The feel I get from the image is a broken relationship finding true forgiveness, relieving pain and resentment and finding peace in unconditional love after realizing they were both at fault.
How close did I get?

no no, my "sifu" actually is a friend mine, who work for the industry. we draw together and share our drawing knowledge or skills. Sometimes we challenge each other tasks or push each other to try things we reluctant to do but still important.
the (moist) ink/water color sort of art works, like this typically, are always from photoshop, and the cell style or smooth looking art are basiclly from Sai. But recently I'm trying to combine them together to speed up my working process, draw in photoshop usually cost much more time then in Sai.

Lovely piece; I think personally Ursa loved both her children equally, with Azula she was mainly put off and dumbfounded by her daughter's cruel and haughty attitude something she didn't encourage (but undoubtedly Ozai did and we never got to see those two come to blows about parenting methods), and just didn't know how to connect with her unlike Zuko who was an adorable Mama's boy and gentle child.
Azula probably assumed her Mother abandoned her because she didn't love her, and no doubt Ozai encouraged such thoughts because it made it easier for him to control Azula and make her loyal to him. Because Azula is so selfish and Ozai fed her all the ultra-nationalistic crap, and made her into his puppet, Azula couldn't function like a normal person, all she was was the dark side and how her Father wanted her to see things, power, greed ambition, treachery and revenge were okay if you didn't get your way; so in hindsight Azula couldn't fathom her own behavior alienated her from her mother (and Zuko and Iroh for that matter, as well as her friends Ty-Lee and Mai), and not knowing the truth about why her Mother left naturally her psychosis would reflect on her feelings of parental abandonment, especially when it became clear Ozai would never see her as an equal since he made her Firelord after he demeaned the title to the equivilant of a regional govenor.
So if Ursala was to see Azula, I have no doubt she'd still want to scoop her in her arms, and assure her daughter she loved he bad things and all and wants to help her get well.
So to me, this piece is beautiful and realistic to the series. Rock on!

yes you are right.
But I also think maybe none of them were wrong, cus it's a royal family so their fate doom to be complicate and painful, struggling with power, and there is no way to raise children like normal family does, but the consequence were just so wrong, and the sacrify is Azula.

Well it didn't help Ozai was a scheming bastard, the country was pursuing a 100yr war for global domination, and Firelord Azulon didn't seem like a nice guy either... maybe if we're lucky we'll find out what happened to Ursa and if she reconnected with either of her children.

I'm not assuming Ursa is a simple woman, even she's Avatar Roku's greatdaughter, the royal familly is such a complicate and dangourous place which twisting everyone away from a normal people, but that's why those character attracting me so much
as "zuko's mother" issue has already been mentioned once in the new show, I believe we'll find it soonner or later.

I think the "unfinished" sort of style for this gives this a "dream sequence" or "flashback sequence" sort of feel, which is about perfect for this. Very sad and emotional, but a very well done piece. Very nice work!
