Description
A piece for Mother's day.Tumblr [link]
I've been drawing Avatar fanarts for a year and Azula is obviously the one I draw most. I was asked if Azula is my favorite character. NO, she's not. She's not my favorite character, she's like my daughter. That means even if she is such a negative and aggressive figure, but even though I can't appreciate her actions, I still love her.
I thought I would never do Ursa with Azula arts, 'cuz I thought that Ursa didn't love Azula in the first place, but now I think I can understand Ursa's feeling as a mother. It's never imaginable for a mother to not love her child, and what had happened between them is still unclear.
I really cried when I was drawing this, so much emotion flowed forth that I could barely carry on. I put all I've felt and understood here, hope it can translate to you.
I'm not going to finish this piece, unless something like this really happened in the show.

This a gorgeous, moving piece of art! I do wish I had seen something like this in the show . . . just because.

I think Ursa is a boundary to Azula's monstrousness (not sure if that's the right word). It's a pity Ursa left in such an early stage, before she could get Azula realize she was loved.
Great work. My eyes are wet...

I don't know what are the proper words to describe the feelings that I have and felt when I see this art.
Heart-wrenching, pity, sorrow........happy, serene, and warm maybe.
Moreover, I don't know what she is to me when I have those such emotions after I see this art. Favorite character? A friend? Or it is more than those?
This art is definitely one of the few pieces that you drew are "emotion-evoking". Not many ATLA and Azula fan arts out there in DA are like the one you did here. You have done an excellent job, Kelly. Few artists can make such emotional and wonderful arts like you are
Make your daughter proud. Make yourself proud.

It's beautiful! It seemed Ursa really did want to fix her relationship with Azula, but she was too much of a troubled girl.

yeah, but even she's a trouble girl, she's her daughter after all, it doesn't matter how she behaved.

Oh no, I didn't mean to make it sound like she didn't care, I believed she did love her, she just couldn't find a way to get through to her. She kinda says it in an episode too.

I started to draw again after I come to a foreign country, I was so giving up with my drawing before, but I still can't let it go. for me the key is love, love to the characters and love to drawing itself. my tip is, there is a simple question you can ask youself: am i gonna to regret if I can't draw well in my life time, if the answer is "yes", then start drawing something now.
hope this can help you

And what feelings did you understand, could you be so kind as to explain it to me?

Such a touching piece, it's so beautiful, I always love your lines and colors Azula and Ursa's relationship was always so sad in my eyes, I mean it was so awful for Azula to thinks that her mother love her brother more than her, it's an awful feeling

I think Ursa loved Azula as much as she did with Zuko. However, unlike her brother, Azula had to be disciplined, to be showed that some of the things she does are bad and she shouldn't do them. That coupled with the fact that Ursa had to compensate for Ozai's dismissal of Zuko, probably made Azula think Ursa favored Zuko to her.
Ursa tried her best, but with Ozai around to pardon the girl and undermine the mother, she couldn't do much. Her best was just not good enough.
Hopefully with Ozai gone she could compensate in the future, if Mike and Bryan decide to revisit the story.
