I've been drawing Avatar fanarts for a year and Azula is obviously the one I draw most. I was asked if Azula is my favorite character. NO, she's not. She's not my favorite character, she's like my daughter. That means even if she is such a negative and aggressive figure, but even though I can't appreciate her actions, I still love her.
I thought I would never do Ursa with Azula arts, 'cuz I thought that Ursa didn't love Azula in the first place, but now I think I can understand Ursa's feeling as a mother. It's never imaginable for a mother to not love her child, and what had happened between them is still unclear.
I really cried when I was drawing this, so much emotion flowed forth that I could barely carry on. I put all I've felt and understood here, hope it can translate to you.
I'm not going to finish this piece, unless something like this really happened in the show.

I think Ursa loved Azula very much but recognized her violent nature and saw the similarities to her father and just sort of lost touch and didn't know what to do about her.

I'm not really familiar with this cartoon series but I thought the mother/daughter expressions were really strong -- and executed with such efficacy of lines (I'm not a critic so this is an on-the-spot reaction)!

i nearly cried just reading your post! Azula is defintiely a character who needed more love, and i blame their dad for forcing war into their hearts. but as you see their progression in the series, you see there's a reason for everyone's path. cosplaying her made me realize how tragic Azula's fate had to go through (doing all those angry expressions and all) *sniff*

I once did an old version of Azula, [link] but it's not much different from the official outfit expect some details.
I'm also planing to do another design of grown up Azula sooner, if you can wait for a while.

I think this is your finest work.
You hoped your emotions would be translated, and I promise you they REALLY did.
When I look at it it feels like: "This is how it has to turn out for them. It's the only right thing".
I want you to know that when I'm starting to feel really down about how the show ended, your Azula- artwork (especially this one) really helps.
And for that, I wish to thank you.

Oh Lord, this brought tears to my eyes. I think Azula needed her mom all along, but she pretended like she didn't because it was easier that way. I really hope we get to see these two have some closure when "The Search" is published. Absolutely frickin' beautiful, well done.

I think that the piece is already finished in its own way, the way its sublime and soothing is the way I think you want us to feel about the two coming back together. The colors translate it to gentleness, warmth, and understanding. I think it turned out great, nice job. Azula is my favorite character and one of my favorite characters in any series so I always have a lot of fun going through your folder.

Through the flashback it almost seems like Azula was always trying to get her mother's love while Zuko was always trying to get attention from his father- both of them going about it in all the wrong ways. There's no doubt in my mind that Ursa loved Azula but I think she was also afraid of what her daughter was turning into and saddened at the fact- like any mother would be. I love how you depicted Azula's need to be in her mother's arms here and how they both loved each other yet both of them were left misunderstood. ;u;

I heard there's a sequel to "The Promise". It'll be called "The Search"; story by Gene Luen Yang, art by Gurihiru. I'm pretty sure it'll be about Zuko and Azula finding their mom.
Makes me feel excited! I can't wait for it to come out.

Azula's hallucination from the finale explained the relationship between her and Ursa. Ursa loves her but she didn't get it. Ursa failed to notice how much of a threat Ozai was to her children. Since he banished her, she couldn't do anything to protect them. The promise comics may provide answers and/or clues.
