I've been drawing Avatar fanarts for a year and Azula is obviously the one I draw most. I was asked if Azula is my favorite character. NO, she's not. She's not my favorite character, she's like my daughter. That means even if she is such a negative and aggressive figure, but even though I can't appreciate her actions, I still love her.
I thought I would never do Ursa with Azula arts, 'cuz I thought that Ursa didn't love Azula in the first place, but now I think I can understand Ursa's feeling as a mother. It's never imaginable for a mother to not love her child, and what had happened between them is still unclear.
I really cried when I was drawing this, so much emotion flowed forth that I could barely carry on. I put all I've felt and understood here, hope it can translate to you.
I'm not going to finish this piece, unless something like this really happened in the show.

I agree with you two. According to "The Search", Ursa poisoned Azulon and left her family so that Ozai didn't have to kill Zuko and could become the Fire Lord.
BTW Azula's my favorite ATLA character whatsoever.

Ursa was forced by Ozai to do a poison to kill his father since he really hated him so much and that he wanted to over throw him.

I think Ursa was more attentive to Zuko due to Ozai constantly disapproving him and the stress of getting the succession of firelord. He wanted to paint a picture of perfection for his family and zuko's attempts simply weren't enough for him. Ursa indeed loves her daughter, she just never gave her the attention she wanted and eventually turned to her father for attention for the worse, obviously.

I think Azulas mind was twisted in such a way that she couldn't see or understand her mothers love because towards the end when her mother payed a compliment to her hair, Azula was so convinced that people only wanted to serve her due to fear. And that the fear was starting to turn into an oncoming revolution against her (or so she felt what with all the banishing). Azula is such a tragic character but that is why she is (personally) one of my favourite characters in the series. She seems a lot deeper and more complex than the others. When I saw her break down in the last episode, I just wanted to comfort her despite all she had said and done. All she wanted was to feel loved and to understand what "evil" was. It's the father that never loved her or Zuko. Frankly, I feel that if he wasn't involved, they would have been a happier and more complete family unit. ):

Very very true. If Ozai wasn't in the picture, although Ursa may have more difficulties handling a lot more violent daughter, both Zuko and Azula would have turned out good and well.
