I believe that her gloves were supposed to have metal points on the finger tips that had to be touched up a little on occasion.

That's a good theory, but the fact that they didn't find a way to cover it in the show is not the best writing at work.

Each episode cost $650,000 to make, so it was probably uneconomical to have an explanation. The intended audience probably wouldn't have noticed anyway.
