I wouldn't call it by accident... I mean, with that body, she could easily catch the attention of half the world... xD Having to change the main character was a surprise, but a pretty woman beeing popular is almost a sure bet.

She was quite low-poly and blocky in original TR game, and there were many other female protagonists in other games. It was a psychological factor that she was female since her shape was more like a blob for nowadays standards. Only Lara got famous, though. The female Indiana Jones seems to be the only formula that could get this kind of impact. Other cool female main characters like in Heavy Metal FAKK2, Syberia, The Longest Journey, Bernoit Sokal's Paradise, and so on never got that much of long lasting impression. Isn't that kind of curious?

Lara got that badass feeling of indiana jones, and for the time it was launched, those low-poly big boobs were still considered hot for many (had a friend just like that) and only added to the character charisma, as well as the tiny shorts, the guns, the exotic locations... and few years later, Jolie's name was added to the franchise, starting one of the most astonishing retrofeeding I've seen. I mean, Angelina Jolie wasn't that much famous when she did the movie, TR sorta launched her to the starship, but now that she is up there and is one of the most influent actress in the world, her image keep boosting Lara Croft's fame.

I guess we can't discard Angelina Jolie from all this since she indeed added an extra boost to the already boiling franchising. Girls with guns have always been a boost even before Lara came it, so I guess it was meant to be a success.

Yeah, but the most curious in her part in it is that it was TR that made her wordwide famous, and now that she is even more famous then the TR franchise we keep remembering that she made Tomb Raider and how hot she was on it...

Yup, AJ is sooo much better than the low-poly model, and yet she was really similar to the game's Lara Croft, the long hair, the forehead, penetrating predator eyes and expressive mouth... and the boobs, not to be forgotten. Added with the guns and the costume she made the perfect Lara.

Tell you the truth, I can't really think of any other actress who could play that role. I confess I was already AJ's fan years before the TR movies, and the Lara from the games don't even compare.

AJ wasn't famous here in Brazil ( and in most part of the world) before Tomb Raider, I knew her and thought she was hot, that kind of dirty and overwhelmingly sexy, but had never seen her movies for exemple. After Tomb Raider I saw that she can perform all sort of roles, and in most of them she is a different tipe of beauty.

AJ was an international fashion model and showed in TV ads and music videos way before becoming an actress. She showed in many movies before reaching fame with the "George Wallace" biographical movie (1997), where she won the Golden Globe Award and was also nominated for an Emmy Award. The next year, AJ starred as the protagonist on a HBO series called "Gia", where she was playing the role of a... fashion supermodel.
Tomb Raider only came out years later, after she showed in several other movies. That's why I think it is unfair to say that she owes her fame to it. She was already praised for her acting talents before it, but TR was her first role meant for a broader audience, a no-brainer movie so-to-speak.

Yep, I agree, and as you said, TR was her first role meant for broader audience, she was famous, yes, but her big boom in the entertainment industry that led her to become more influent than Oprah started at TR. Her complete change of behaviour also started then, I saw an interview with her once where she stated that recording for Tomb Raider around the world opened her eyes for it, after that she became embassador of ONU. And ultimately it led her to adopt children from the "3rd world" country (couldn't think of better words to express this concept). And she became even more famous with it (intentionally or not), to the point that she is much more famous and influent than her husband, Bradd Pitt.
From the association of TR and Jolie, TR was the one that had the greatest profit. They hired Jolie because she was perfect for the job AND wasn't as expensive as a Julia Roberts, so to speak, and now years have passed and they still profit with her image, while AJ doesn't do so anymore. TR changed her life, as she said, yes, but it no longer influences it.

I don't know much of AJ's life, but I know I already liked her as an actress years before TR, and I still think nobody else could had done the Lara role better than her. ^______^

Before beeing an embassador of ONU, she was famous for cutting herself and for carrying a small glass with her boyfriends blood in a pendant, the many tattoos and some more details that would give goosebumps to grannies. For the tabloids, she was a risky factor that could attract the misfits or to scary away the most conservative. For me, she have always been a great actress, independently of her personal life, and I agree with you, I couldn't see anyone else in that role.

Oh I think AJ's full lips have a lot to do with her unique looks. There are other fashion models as pretty as she is, but not with those lips. I think a lot of her general appeal is centered around her mouth. As a matter of fact, I don't know of many other woman who has lips like her's. ^^

I've seen many that literally tried to copy her mouth, cirurgically, but they don't fit well in most of the other faces. Every now and then I see someone married with a rich man that does so just because her husband said he liked AJ's lips. Same with that woman that went through a lot of surgery to resemble a cat, just because her husband liked cats. She turned into a monster, literally. [link] (picture of her through the years).
Jolie also have beautiful eyes that match perfectly with her lips, and it's almost as if all her face was adjusted to those features when she was born.
