I used the classic photographer lighting, with the key light on the left to sculpt the body with shadows, and a rim light on the right to counter the dark edges. ^^

Lighting is hard on 3D too, because different materials react differently depending on the setup. I think many out there underestimate those things.

If you are coming from Poser 8, you will see basically no change in Poser Pro 2010, it just runs more smoothly in 64-bits. If you are coming from Poser 7 or older, you will notice a more significant performance boost. It all depends on what you are coming from, and what hardware/OS you have. If your computer is a Mac, or is not 64-bits, then Poser Pro 2010 is not for you, and Poser 8 should do the job for half the price.

Windows 7 64bit. Is it worth full price, since my last copy was P5 - been using DAZ Studio and Carrara. I have to say the lighting finally got to where it needs to be.

I have my doubts if the Pro version is worth its full price tag. The final render qualities between the Pro and 8 versions are the same, where perhaps the prior runs faster and smoother because it is running native in 64-bits. I think Poser Pro 2010 performs better, and we shouldn't have to pay premium for that, since the competition offers a 64-bit version for no extra cost - that's the standard nowadays. If you are already using Carrara to render, I see no reason to switch to Poser since it cannot compare with the speed and quality you get from Carrara. Why would you switch? ^^

I have tried Carrara myself, and found the renderer to be very fast and the final images high quality. On the other hand, the lack of support for Poser native materials doubled the workload, and the posing/conforming was rather glitchy. The posing dials were never meant to be used out of the zero to one range, and that was a pain to use in my experience, because you have to type them by hand, and values are lost if you click it again.

So there are pros and cons, and I decided to keep Poser and try to be creative with what I have. In my gallery I am not aiming for realism, so the double workflow in Carrara would not pay off for me in the end. I guess what tool should be used depends a lot of what you want from it.

Ya that is my biggest issue, 40% of the time the poser stuff doesnt work or works half way. I haven't figured out the exact problem to tell the programmers. I am busy with Carrara 8 beta and solving this problem would make Carrara a real killer. I do miss the exactness of poser when it comes to setting up a scene excluding lighting.

The introduction of advanced lighting in Poser 6 was a hit, but it only became usable in Poser 7 with the introduction of HDRI. Global illumination (IDL) in Poser 8 was a nice addition, though its usability is questionable in a program meant to render characters.

But I understand what you said about precision posing in Poser. I had a hard time trying to position things in Carrara, but what really turns me down is not being able to use Poser native materials there. I don't think *any* other 3D program will ever support Poser shader nodes because those are proprietary and therefore undocumented... -_-
