Description

Izar poked a tentative claw at the cookies. They had cooled enough to hold. Mama Susan gave him a grin and a thumbs up.

“Do you think they’ll like it?” He asked. The Den still felt so large, with many winding corridors and rooms. There were kits everywhere, and adults too.

“I’m sure they will!” Mama Susan said “Food brings many folk together, and I am sure no kit can resist these!” she handed a cool tray to him “Just remember to ask if they’ve got any allergies.”

“I will.”

Hopefully these cookies could help him meet more kits. Make the Den feel less big. Or at least that was what Mama Susan had suggested. Hopefully she was right.

“Now off you go!” she patted him on the shoulder and sent him on his way “There should be kits in the main living room, but you can probably meet some in the halls too.”

And so he headed through the Den. It was quiet for a few minutes, with adults heading to and from the kitchen. They greeted him cheerfully, asking who the cookies were for, said that it could definitely help him make friends, and directed him all over the Den for kits. The Den was big, and there were so many kits. The chance he’d run into no one at all was slimming by the seconds. So he continued towards the main living room. He’d finally managed to memorize the route from the kitchen to the main living room. His total of routes was now 3, out of… he wasn’t sure. The place felt like a maze of halls and rooms and staircases. Thankfully there were maps scattered about, and the various arts and play rooms had names. East Wing Living Room, North Wing Classroom, and more he couldn’t remember or knew how to find. At least there were windows very often. He could always look out into the Great Tree, or at the sky and the gardens. Didn’t always help orient himself, but… looking at the sky made him feel a little less lost. At least the outside was right there. The Den Mothers had sorely discouraged climbing the branches, and he wasn’t going to, but at least the outside was only the next window away. And if he kept to the windows, then he could find a staircase eventually.

He finally started meeting kits. A few hurried past, but others stopped and asked for cookies. Said they were great, that it was kind of him, that they were almost as good as their parents’, and soon there were only three cookies left. He headed through a more deserted hallway, and was close to looping this entire floor of the Den.

Excited chatter sounded from the end of the hallway. Izar slowed, his ears standing higher. They sounded like kits. He did not recognize their voices.

Maybe they’d like cookies?

Two kits came around the corner. They were identical, the same shades of browns, with freckles on their faces and bodies. They chatted together, then the one on the right spotted Izar.

And then they saw the cookies.

They sprinted towards him, and Izar took a step back. They skittered to a halt and gave him wide grins.

“Hi!” the one on the right said. Now that both kits were close, Izar could see they were not truly identical. The one on the right did not have lighter freckles across her snout and chest like the other. And the one of the left had bright magenta leaves sticking out below their… phy…lakardia, which were speckled with the same shade. They both had pastel purple eyes, and the one with the leaves had spots of the same magenta color. They both leaned forwards to look at the cookies.

“You baked those?” the one of the right asked.

“Y-yes” Izar nodded, his phylakardia humming louder “Mama Susan helped.”

“They smell awesome!” the one on the right said “Can we have some?”

“Yeah!” Izar sat down and moved the tray towards them. The twins did the same.

“Thank you!” the one on the right said. Then Izar remembered he should ask for allergies. They both shook their head. They both took a cookie.

“By the way” the kit on the right said “What’s your name?”

“Izar.”

“Cool! I’m Finch, and this is my twin, Sparrow!”

“Hi” Sparrow said.

“You’re new here?” Finch asked and nodded to Izar’s black phylakardia. Apparently it was unusual for it to not match his eyes. He didn’t quite… get what was so important about it matching, something about magic? But apparently it wouldn’t have any effects on his magic other than color, so it really didn’t matter all that much, he reckoned.

“I’ve been here for a few months.” Izar said. A few months and the Den still felt large. He hadn’t explored the Den much, especially not in comparison to the rest of the Great Tree. There was so much to see and remember. And he wasn’t sure how far he was allowed to go in the Den, if he could stumble upon rooms they didn’t want him to enter. They’d given him a quick tour when he got dispatched from the hospital, and he and Taegan had gone on a few explorations, but it was a good while ago now, so he couldn’t remember where they’d been or how they got there. Besides he knew how to get to the main living room and the cafeteria and one of the big arts rooms, so he stuck to that. The Den was so large. He’d lost track of where he was a few times. And exploring on his own was scary, and asking kits where he was made him nervous. Would they laugh at him for not knowing? And so the Den remained large.

“Like in the Den or the Great Tree?” Finch asked.

“Uh… all of it.”

Sparrow nodded and chewed on a cookie. Finch straightened up.

“Have you been to the Whispering Caves yet?”

“A bit.” That place was also big. And he couldn’t see the sky. So he stuck to rivers and lit pathways.

“There’s so many good hiding spots there for hide and seek!” Finch went on, eyes alight with excitement “I’ve seen some kits with gills hide in the rivers, but then Mama Nana made a rule against it.” Finch pouted for a quick second, then grinned again.

“Have you been to one of Mama Nana’s hide and seek?” Sparrow asked as Finch started to eat her cookie.

“N-not yet.” Izar shook his head. His phylakardia still hummed louder than usual.

“You should!” Finch said “It’s so much fun! And the winners get cookies!”

Well that sounded fun, he should do that.

“The cupboards are a great place to hide.” Sparrow said “And the rafters, if you can get up there.”

Izar looked to the ceiling. That looked… dangerous.

“There’s also a good few tunnels and walkways, but Mama Nana knows this place like the back of her paw.” Finch said “She knows where all of them are.”

Izar nodded.

“Have you caught a goober yet?” Sparrow asked.

“Uhm…” the one animal he could remember the name of “No, I haven’t.”

Both kits gasped.

“You should! It’s so fun! Eddie always has so many of them, so if you catch it you usually get to keep it!”

So that’s how so many kits had them.

“Just make sure they don’t eat something you don’t want them to.” Sparrow said.

“I’ll remember that.”

The kits asked him more questions. Had he experienced Haunted Hootenanny before (no, this was his first), did he have a costume for it (he and Taegan had talked about it, but he wasn’t sure. Might just dress up as a ghost.), had he ever gone trick or treating (no), had he ever visited the wooly farm (no), would he like a kibbee or a nudibark as a pet (he could not remember which was which, but a pet would be cool), and then bid him farewell and thanked him for the cookies. Izar sat down near a potted plant and ate the last cookie. The hall was silent, and the last sunlight fell in through the window above him.

That had gone better than he’d have hoped!

The third, and the last

Thank you to TopazOwl for letting me borrow Sparrow and Finch! Hope I got them at least somewhat in character, if not then I hope you can forgive me ^^'

I did say I would use a simpler style, which I did, but this one ended up turning out more detailed and closer to my usual style than initially anticipated.
