While logical to use their mouths, it's also impractical.  The situation of ponies using small arms is a loss-loss (unless unicorn magic haxorz), so why not spiff it up a bit and give a more expressive piece?  

There's a lot more weight when you can see a character aim down the sights in a combat-ready pose about to fire rather than trot/gallop around with a moody expression with a S&W M500 in their mouth...

In most Equestria: Fallout fiction Earth-ponies use their mouths, Pegaus use their wings + mouth, and Unicorns have their telepathy, Zebras have figured out how to stand up and shoot, Gryphons use their hands, as Do Diamond Dogs, Buffalo use their mouths.

I'm cannon fodder, its all about the canon, know your canons or you'll end up shooting a canon ball at yourself instead of the enemy.

You do realize the the term "Cannon Fodder" is a negative term for expandable combatants forced to deliberately fight against hopeless odds?

Anyway, that's going off topic.  Here I draw to express a character and what poses they'll be in for the act...  I don't draw to be a zealot to all canon material; if you're going to fire shots at me for chipping the paint on the canon, then you have better brought a lot of ammo, good sir.

I was trying to diffuse this situation by telling a horrible joke and not fire shots at you. Since Zebras can shoot while standing up, at least with rifles and other somewhat larger guns, ponies should be able to do so to. Although, for form sake, they'd need to be trained in bipedal walking and gun using first, as its more natural for ponies/Zebras to be quadruped.

My conclusion here would be that, while the characters I depict are for a FoE setting, the pose is just a pose and aren't exactly meant to be 100% canon to what one would expect from a FoE artwork.  It's just there for show and weight.

I think that ponies could hold and use hand guns just so long as they had a lever type mechanism that they could fit their hoof around and they used both hooves to support and fire the gun. That's just my thought's though. Amazing drawing by the way!

It's a cartoon...  That and I have a lot more difficulties with posing them with firearms in their mouths, sometimes ya just gotta steer away from some canon material, honestly...  Posing them with the firearms in their mouths also cuts off a lot of expression, weight, and emotion, in my opinion.
