I still vaguely remember how I felt, at age 8, when I first got to Bowser (or rather, fake Bowser no. 1) in World 1-4 of the original SMB. I had seen the black-and-white photo of him in the instruction booklet, but seeing him in color and motion was bizarre and unsettling (you have to understand, this was 1990). Plus, the fact that he spits fire at you before he even appears on screen heightens the tension!
