Fangamer Packing Slip #045 of 200 (Totally Awesome Category)Another one of those heart-wrenching scenes the creators of Zelda are so good at.
TOUCHUPS: Oh boy. Well, for one, the rope on the left wasn't at the right height, and for another Saria's face originally looked a little derpy. On top of everything else, there was also one big thing I decided could go without correcting: in the game, the bridge is HUGE compared to Link and the Kokiri. The ropes pretty much tower over them. But in the end I figured I could let that slide.

I don't know about you, but when I first played OOT and got to that scene where Link just runs out of the forest after Saria gave him the Fairy Ocarina I felt both shocked and disgusted by how he reacted. Technically I was disgusted with myself in game since I always give the character my name, but you get the idea. You think that they would have made Saria get angry with Link when he returned to the forest for her song, but oh well.

"Disgusted" is perhaps an overreaction, if you'll forgive my forwardness. I seriously doubt Link *meant* to hurt Saria's feelings. I've always pictured him as an unusually kind, thoughtful person - or at least that he *means* to be. It's possible he's a little socially awkward or something, and didn't realize he was hurting her feelings - he only knew his next task was to get to Hyrule Castle and meet someone there.
Or maybe he actually was straining his brain to think of a proper goodbye, but couldn't, and just broke down and left in spite of himself. That's the beauty of a silent protagonist, and the ambiguity Miyamoto injects into his works: so many possible interpretations.
