Mother 1 wasn't so unpopular - before Smash Bros made Ness the face of the series, Earthbound had the worst sales, both in Japan and then even less in America. Before Earthbound blew up, Mother 1 was on par with 3 and thus tied at first place in sales. It's because of the representation in Smash Bros that makes Mother 1 the 'least popular' in comparison.
The shoutout from Smash Bros doesn't really make comparing them fair or easy, but my point is that Mother 1 was more popular in sales than Earthbound, and just as popular as 3. Judging by the way this article was worded, 1 may have been THE most popular.

Well, I was basing my assumption on what I saw going on at Starmen.net at the time I wrote this comic - judging by the vocal crowd, only a small handful of us even liked the game. The rest of the forum loved to hate it, and bashed it mercilessly. In fact, in 2011 Starmen.net even announced a MOTHER 1 Fanfest AS AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE. Fortunately, enough people complained that it was cruel to the actual fans of the game to pull a stunt like that, so the staff decided to go through with the Fanfest after all. Of course, I speak in the past tense, but it STILL gets a lot of crap. IIRC, Miiverse was particularly unkind when EarthBound Beginnings was released on the Wii U's VC, and every big YouTuber I've seen who reviews the game tells their audience it's a stinker and to skip it and start with EarthBound.

Ugh that sickens me... Beginnings is my favourite of the bunch! (I haven't played 3 yet because I want to play them in order and I'm still on 2, though I have high hopes). I've seen some of them say they disliked it, but I didn't know it was this much. It's even worse when you consider that every part of Earthbound is taken from Beginnings. It's just a remake in disguise and everyone blindly loves it, like they think they're cool hipsters for preferring the series' goofy tumour of a sequel just because Ness appeared in Smash Bros as an elegy and is a good fighter rather than actually comparing and evaluating what Earthbound is to the series.
In fact, I always tell people; "If Mother 1 is a book by Steven King, Mother 2 is the same book parodied by Weird Al." I'm gonna make that my signature underneath my comments.

I know, right? It's just another part of the reason why I continue to do my fancomic, so that people will see all the different things you can do with the story in your head, and that it's anything but boring (there are people who actually say this).
