Description
EN : Hello everyone !
Did you think I would just end Inktober and go back to the depths of my crippling depression ? Of course not <>w<>
Depression joke aside, I'm happy to confirm that I will keep on drawing for at least one more month, and this month will be colourful *w* As usual, you'll get the character's name, and a bit of insight on the drawing process.
Today is light blue, and I think these two ladies are ready to fight. YES ! Almost three years after, I've decided to redo my Red vs Blue drawing. Before she was announced in Smash 4, I didn't know much about Bayonetta, only that I preferred her "red" version. It was also a time where I mained ZS Samus. But I've grown fonder of Bayonetta for the last few months, because I've actually played both games, and the "blue" Bayonetta is now my favourite... She's so elegant *-* This was a big piece for me. Not in size, but in meaning -this is a fanart of two popular characters, and if I had to redraw them, it had to be better than the previous time. Needless to say, if heights may be more accurate, I can't say this is perfect. But I like it anyway. I'm very happy to see my improvement, and to have worked on this seriously (I mean... I've done sketches before actually drawing it ).
Well, thank you for reading, and see you tomorrow
Mais ça me plaît. Je suis contente de voir ma progression, et d'avoir travaillé dessus sérieusement (je veux dire... J'ai fait des croquis préparatoires ).
Et bien, merci d'avoir lu, et à demain

Is this colored pencil? About how long did this take you?

Yes, mostly I've strengthened the shadows with alcohol markers (which is why there are both smooth and sharps shadows, eg. Bayonetta's gloves), and tweaked some colours a bit with my computer (initially, the whip was yellow with black lines for example).
I think before scanning the drawing, I had worked 2 to 3 hours on it (2 good hours on the draft then inking, and maybe another hour on colours). The modifications on computer were done in 30 minutes I guess, it was mostly trying to get the original colours and few effects (like the glow on Samus's shoes >w>')

I've never heard of alcohol markers. Can you get those at any art supply store? Do you use them over colored pencil? What do they do?

Oh, and I forgot to add this drawing, to show you the importance of the sheet of paper >w>'
Some papers are what's called "layout paper", where colour won't blend or spread on the paper. If you're not careful, like I was this one time, you can end up with pretty weird results ! (the stripes were totally not planned ^^')

Even the stripes weren't planned it turned out to look nice anyways. I usually work in a sketchbook with colored pencils. What is the right kind of paper to use with these markers?

Well, it was fun for her clothes, but she still seems to have a strange skin illness on her left shoulder xD
One kind of paper I would absolutely avoid is thin paper, like below 90 gsm, because the colour will just spread too much. I personally have a ream of paper from Hahnemühle, specially designed for markers/technical pens/ink (in France, the art industry understood quickly that manga was popular and there are usually products that are labelled "for manga drawing", even if they may not be that different from "traditional" products).
This paper is 120 gms, and acid free (apparently acid in paper is no good >w>'). As I said earlier, layout paper can be tricky, as only one side will be "marker proof" (and not absorb the pigment totally), but apparently, they are more often used to mix two colours together with a blender, and then colour the drawing (if I find a proper tutorial, I'll send it to you ). I think paper above 150 gms may be too rough on markers, but I haven't actually tried.

You're welcome ^^ I guess I'm just myself quite fed up about not being able to find reliable information on things, so if I can tell about my experience, and I have time to do so, why not help ? ^^

It was very helpful. I took notes on the types of markers and paper that you recommend

I don't know if they are called the same in English-speaking countries, this was a rough translation ! The most famous brands of alcohol-based markers are Copics and Promarkers (from previously Letraset, now owned by Winsor&Newton). There also are other brands like Chameleon, but they are often expensive. I've heard other brands like Yosoo work well for a lower price, but I've never used them myself If you live in the US, I can't tell you exactly where, but I'm sure some stores will sell some
Basically, they act like markers, so they can penetrate paper quite deeply, and may spread on your sheet a bit, but once you start colouring, and until the sheet is dry, colours blend really smoothly. You can vary your shading with both smooth and sharp shadows then, either from applying more and more layers of the same colour, of by blending different colours. Here's a few links to other of my drawings, where I've used markers for shading
(no real shadows, just a bit more pigment added here and there will the sheet was still wet from alcohol)
(mix of smooth shadows and sharper ones, three markers used, background added digitally)
("sharp" shadows, but often didn't wait for the sheet to dry, so they are a bit blurry. Also, mixing of two different hues of colour)
I've used only markers for years now, almost a decade, because often people would react like "wow, it looks like a print !", and this gave me the feeling of being more professional. But in reality, any tool is a good tool, and last summer, I've been "forced" to use colour pencils for drawings and completely re-discovered this medium. It's also why I've been using them for this month, to handle pencils more easily For this drawing, I decided to mix the two techniques because my colour pencil can be used to do aquarelle normally, and I wanted to see if alcohol would make them react... It kind of did ? >w>' So from now on, I think I'll work with both depending of what result I want

Thank you for the info about the markers. I will look for them. I would love to try them out. What do you mean you were forced into using colored pencils LOL

Well, I participated in three days of selection for a manga art school, and we had to use colour pencil to colour our drawings (no alcohol based markers, aquarelle, pastel, nor paint). I think it was for the sake of everyone using the same medium, but they told us beforehand to bring colour pencils, so I wasn't too dumbfounded xD
I'd advise you to start with grey markers, as I think it will be easier to train and try to understand how they work at first

C'est le pouvoir de Bayonetta ça *-* Avant de mettre les couleurs, je me disais que j'avais raté sa bouche... Mais son charme dévastateur opère quand tous les détails sont là <3
