Description Just finished this mixed media piece, on suggestion of a friend. It's about 10 x 12 and uses a technique devised by the great illustrator, C. F. Payne.

well, it's a combination of media. Basically, it's

drawing on cold press illustration board, sprayed with a fixative called Sureguard

A wash of gesso and whatever color the lightest area of the painting might be (or a color you choose)...you will 'remove' back to this color, though you can add lighter color later of course

Spray Sureguard again

Paint the whole thing with watercolor, getting it as finished as you can or want it to be

lay a thin wash of oil over it, which is a mixture of dio violet and lime green (to dilute the violet), though I think you can use whatever color you want...this step basically unifies the painting. You wait a half an hour or so for the wash to almost dry, then you use a kneaded erase or, if needed, a hard eraser, to lift out the highlights or wherever you might not want this wash of color to show much, or not at all. Let it dry.

Spray with sureguard again

Paint again with acrylic to darken darks, change hues, etc, getting it as finished as possible. Color pencils can also be used at this stage, which is basically the finished touches stage.

there you go!
