Description
Last winter, just after Christmas, we were Cold Shocked by temps -3 F (-19 C) and -30 F (-34 C) wind chill. For some of you that might be a warm day, but we spent the last 40 years in Florida before moving to North Carolina. Even the native mountain people were freezing their butts off and pipes were bursting in homes everywhere. As for the animals, “not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse”. Except this cat showed up at our door half frozen and totally starved. She was afraid of us but desperate. We fed her and I built her a temporary shelter, thinking she’d move on when it warmed up, but my wife had named her by the 2nd day. This is a photo of her 8 months later, fat and mostly happy. I don’t know what her life was before, but she has a limited capacity for trusting humans, basically just one, my wife. I’m usually the first one up in the morning, so I feed her, but she just tolerates my presence. I shot this photo with a telephoto, otherwise she wouldn't have sat there.
