Description

The Appalachian mountains of the Southeast U.S. support one of the world's most biodiverse forests in the world. There are over 2,000 different plant species. That number gets significantly lower at higher elevations ( above 5,500 feet 1,680 m) where cold temperatures and rocky soils make tree growth nearly impossible except for some spruce and fir trees.  Conditions are so harsh in some areas (Balds) that trees don’t grow at all.
