Description
A lot of people have asked me whether I work with real trees as well. Here is a tree that I have owned for about 6 years.Related content

Beautiful. I'm a master at killing real bonsai. That's why I stick with wire now.

Same here. I still have a few....maybe about 60 live trees now...down from 400.

*Whistles quietly*
I did wonder if you worked real bonsais as well as your wire ones.
But it would appear that there is skill in the world of the living as well as the metal.
I am impressed, (and jealous.)
Did you start this one from seed? Buy it? or shape it from a larger specimen?

Hi,
I bought it a pre-bonsai tree in a plastic pot. Here is a picture of pretty much how it looked when I bought it and stuck it in a bonsai pot: scontent-b-sjc.xx.fbcdn.net/hp…

Is this a deadwood piece? I love bonsai but I have a black thumb. This looks beautifully well cared for.

The problem with bonsai is that most of them are sold and marketed as "indoor" trees when most trees can't survive indoors. I own about 80 trees right now and of those, only one that can survive indoor conditions.
Most first time buyers will end up with a dead tree for several reasons:
1. The tree was sold in a manner similar to a temporary flower arrangement and lacked the strength required to survive.
2. The soil was so poor it made watering very difficult, often the top will get get while the bottom stays totally dry. Compacted soil will often create channels of water and only some of the roots will receive any water.
3. The tree was never meant for indoor as suggested by the vendor.
4. The buyer has no information regarding the history or care of the tree.
These are 4 popular reasons I have found from the many bonsai friends I talked to.
The sad thing is, you will feel like it's YOUR fault the tree died, when in fact, the tree was already destined to die and you never want to get into the hobby because you feel it's impossible to keep them alive.
Keeping a bonsai alive is easy, but it's a skill that requires patience and passion. The quality of your trees will reflect your skills and patience.
I hope you will give the hobby another chance and I'm here to help in any way I can.
Thanks,
Ken

Wow, maybe that was my problem. That and I live in a place that has crazy wild weather changes. Mountain region. I'll probably give the hobby another shot. I would love to do a Japanese Maple. It's why my name is Maple-Girl. The Japanese maple stands for serenity. Which I need. ^_^ I think it's a beautiful tree.

It was preshaped but I didn't like it so I reshaped it a few years ago.

Great job! They can be so enjoyable and at the same time they can be a pain. The end result is a real work of art!

Oh, that's great~ I wondered that myself. I used to have one, but it was too much work for me (especially in a house with a ton of cats that require even more care, haha...). So I gave it to my brother, who is really good with plants. X3 I should get a fake one or something, because I really do love them.

It's more like 16 years old. But I've had it for six years.

Looks really well done. I like the length of the jin, balances out the branch length on the opposite side

Very nice.
You say "I have owned" rather than "I have grown." Did it start from scratch or did someone else start it?

Hi,
I bought as a wired tree in a plastic pot. It was originally a full cascade with very little movement. I decided to restyle it and as more movement to it about 4 years ago.
Thanks,
Ken

Thanks! That clears that up. It just seemed an odd way of putting it.
A beautiful specimen.
