Description Wow...this marks a lot of round numbers. It's my 100th origami deviation and my 20th modular one. Anyhow, this is the Six Intersecting Pentagrams, or Stars if you like. this is a fantastically beautiful model, and will replace the tetrahedrons on my front page. It's nice and coloured because I made it out of post-it notes. Also, I manged to figure out the symmetry here by myself instead of with the help of a set of instructions, so I am ridiculously proud of it!!!!!!

Made with 30 S.I.P. units: Have fun figureing it out! I sure did!

It's not really if you've done any modular work before. It can be a bit frustrating, but I found it nowhere near as frustrating as some of the other units (I'm looking at you intersecting triangles!) and the results are well worth any frustration.

I believe I made a tutorial for this one if you look through my gallery. Have fun, and good luck!

Thank you! I am very proud of this piece, and turned it into a going away present to one of the post-docs when I left McGill...no wait, the present was the second smaller one I made. This one is still back home.

It is most definitely difficult and awesome! But it was a lot of fun too and you should give the tutorial a try! Anyhow, I'm glad you like it!

well.... I'll wait till holidays, then I'll give it certainly a try...
right now I don't have the time...
I mean it looks really difficult and confusing
and it seems to be a lot of work
how long did it take you to do

The first time? Took me about 4 hours. Most of that was trying to get all the rings in place. The second time only took me an hour, and it's much smaller and nicer looking, made with tiny post it notes.

What the heck? How do you people come up with these kind of things? It's so cool~

Kessukoofah In reply to Tagoka [2010-08-27 01:16:01 +0000 UTC]

I can't speak for the masters who design the models in the first place, but myself, I usually just follow the directions they come up with. Out of books mostly. In the case of this one (and a couple other modular ones) I figured it out from pictures I found. Which is only slightly better, but still...lot less impressive then inventing them myself.

In terms of the shape here though, I can say where they come from. In one word, geometry. the symmetry is the same used in many other model so the question becomes can it be done with other shapes. how to design a unit that creates that shape. stuff like that. in the case of the other modulars there's a set of solids out there and most are just recreating the same shape with different units. So I learn a differant unit and then try to do the same shape again.

hope that helps. And I agree, it's most definately cool!

Thanks for all the info.Honestly, I tried doing similar things to that but always failed, so it looks quite amazing when someone actually creates something. Geometrical or not.
Off topic: I saw a documentary on paper how people Sculpt with it, as in boil it somehow and fold it til they get what they need.For example a gnome o;

Thanks! I like to think I'm good with paper, but I have a long way to go yet before that's true. The day I design my first model though will definately be a day of celebration and drinking, lemme tell you that!

Well you'll have a chance to find out! I'll be uploading a tutorial for this at some point either today or tomorrow, and I'll expect it to go to use! Oddly enough, it's actually easier to do then most of my modular series because the modules here, the stars, WANT to stay together, so you only have to worry about the right way to put them after.

(Thanks for the comment!)
