I like the whole base of the design. Is it supposed to be referenced to an alligator, or a crocodilian?

but I thought crocodilians all had the distinctive narrow snout, and alligators had the flatter-wider snouts.

those are crocodiles in general. The entire family in which alligators, crocodiles, caiman, and gharials belong to is called crocodilia. hence all those can be called crocodilians.
