Description
This from my run on AOD monthly in 2006. Fun times. This was from the old school arc,..which saw ash revisit the cabin in a tale that sorta retold Evil Dead 2 in spots to rework slight details from the movie to fit the ongoing format better and address some left over ideas. Like the tape recorder withh the incantations, ash's undead hand and what really still lurked in the cellar.Jim Kuhorics scripts were so fun! It had a lot of fun detail and let me play as well. I hope to get to work with him again soon one day. He had that cool balance of writing for artists but also had cool stuff going on underneath the plot.
This was early on in my run, I basically was learning on the job as far as likenesses and licensing go. I had to study Bruce's likeness. Its funny because everyone was on me in editorial because I didn't put Bruces cleft chin in...the only problem is Bruce doesn't have one...LOL (no line or divot in the middle, just a strong square chin ) Everyone was so used to his manly chin that as with most peoples memory, we kinda Idealize and fill in gaps and see what we want to see. Im not gonna assume to say I did the definative ASH or anything, but when you have to study the likeness , you can sorta begin to, by really SEEING the person, you can strip away your assumptions. Its tough to do, but when you do, you get so much closer to get that likeness.
I also, whenever I come on a project, or fill-in , I try to adjust to what came before. To at least not make my stuff too jarring to the readers and just do little stylistic touches to smooth the transition. Not ape anyone mind you ,, but be ware of the previous artist. I mean , as a natural aspect of what i do, i kinda walk a line between a more realistic style and animated. I dunno, kinda like how Jim Lee isn't photo realistic, but hes not cartoony really either...I hope that makes sense...my apologies to JIM!
Anyhoo,...I was following Nick Bradshaw, who has a groovy animated style thats sorta to me like the Dragons Lair and Space Ace type stuff, so I knew my stuff might be jarring at first for fans so I tried, not to copy him, but in spots over exaggerate MY ASH, but I also wanted let this be an outlet for me to really have fun with concentrating on likenesses. Y'know, just find a place for me to be me. So you'll probably notice in places that Im more cartoony in spots and that its at first, inconsistant. Luckily, its seemed fans felt my stuff at least fit the tone of the movies pretty good.
But as in the case with the spread, I got frustrated with the likeness in the main shot, so to keep from destroying the paper i was drawing on, I grabbed the sketchbook, grabbed some screen shots from the movies, then drew it in the sketchbook, then lightboxed the sketch on board.
When I do likenesses, I sometimes get asked if i lightbox actual photos. I DONT. I know some pros do, but I was taught that photos are also someones work and i respect that ( I was taught that by one of my high school art teachers.. I never went to college..LOL)and feel that working to draw that likeness is part of the journey and the process of learning.
Im sure you could debate with me the validity of lightboxing photos but its not for me

You mean this is official art for Dynamite Comics? Dude, on behalf of the Founder of
Let me say thank you to all the artist and writers that have been worked on that comic. It truly lived up to the Army of Darkness name. For those who have read it and fans, they would say the same thing.

REally well done with the lineart! The only thing is the lack of blacks in most of the panels makes it confusing. It's incredibly detailed, but without some good values here and there, it loses it's edge.
But really! This is the best I've seen of Evil Dead/ Army of Darkness art!
