I was expecting this to be something like:
"You didn't let me finish! As I was saying, this time its attendants are going to... Its booths are cheaper"
or something like that.
And I expected the last phrase to be "Its like a grammar Nuremburg trial" just for the LULZ.

Anyway, as a non native English speaker, seeing native English speakers doing this makes me

'A person who believes it is their destiny to stamp out all spelling and punctuation mistakes at the cost of popularity, self-esteem and mental well-being.'
The Finns have a word for that- Pilkunnussija. It literally translates to mean 'comma fucker'(according to Cracked).
And I am not making this up xD

Heh, I've not been too big on that term either, nor the fact that it seems to go with ANY iteration of correction.

I've a friend who often uses a word incorrectly...ALL OF THE TIME, I should say. If I correct her, even once, does that make me a "Grammar Nazi?" Are we not allowed to correct anyone, at all, even if it helps them better understand something?

And, yes, she checked a word balloon...quite the power.

Thanks for the share!

It's okay to correct someone on occasion. A so-called "grammar Nazi" is someone who nitpicks all the time.

Really, I just wish people would stop using "Nazi" as a cute joke word.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

DMajorBoss In reply to CaptainQuirk [2012-11-03 06:58:37 +0000 UTC]

I agree that people should stop using it as such as well. And, yes, corrections on occasion can help. Sadly, though, people use that term for pretty much any and all corrections...it gets irking.

And actually, she's wrong.
Its is the combination of it and is. It's is implying something ownership over another thing, similar to saying Jared's or Mary's.

Ophelos In reply to RandomlyGoneInsane [2012-11-02 02:18:22 +0000 UTC]

And yet your previous comment stated it like it was fact. If you suddenly turn around and call it an "opinion", it's no longer fact. Therefore, you're just passive-aggressively avoiding the fact that you're just plain wrong.

Whoever taught you that "its" is "it is" while "it's" is possessive taught you wrong. You can't have a combination of two words like that without an apostrophe. That's basically like writing "don't" as "dont" or "won't" as "wont". That's (notice I didn't write that as "thats") incorrect.

Hearts-Are-Cold In reply to RandomlyGoneInsane [2012-11-01 19:36:38 +0000 UTC]

Wrong. Wrong. So wrong it hurts. "It's" is a contraction, short for "it is". "Its" implies ownership. Google it.

What you google "it's its" without any bias as to which means what, these are the first five results (excluding one about It's-it ice cream, which is hardly relevant)

[link]

[link]

Oh.. huh. Look at that. The top five results all say the same thing. It's means it is/it has. Its is possessive. How about that.

Need more references?

If you type "It held it's ball." into Microsoft Word, it highlights "it's" as being grammatically incorrect. But if you remove the apostrophe, it does not highlight it anymore.

You were taught wrong.

Well, then either you were taught wrong or mixed up something, I am afraid
That happens, it is no biggie. I worked as a lawyer's assistant and my bosses made frequent grammar mistakes even though they really should know better. Same with my late dad, who was a teacher.

It is never to late to learn new things, though.

His, her and its are possessive adjectives.

IcyPheonix In reply to RandomlyGoneInsane [2012-11-01 20:10:58 +0000 UTC]

Wow, then whoever taught you needs to be slapped with a dictionary because it is completely wrong.

It's = a contraction of 'it is' (just like how there's is a contraction of 'there is')
Its = ownership of something (i.e 'This is its home')

The only time an apostrophe is used to show ownership is with nouns (Larry's, Jenni's the cat's and so forth). Any other time it is used as a contraction of two words (you're-you are; they're-they are; I'm-I am; Aren't-Are not...)

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

RandomlyGoneInsane In reply to IcyPheonix [2012-11-01 20:18:27 +0000 UTC]

There's a lot of people to be slapped then..

To be completely fair and honest, I see the use of its and it's as... A personal choice, or something along those lines. I've heard both sides of this argument numerous times, yet never find any sort of "Set in Stone English Rule" that shows which one is right or wrong. Most of the people I've known however go with the its as the contraction, and that is what I've known all my life, so I choose to stand by it.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

IcyPheonix In reply to RandomlyGoneInsane [2012-11-01 21:06:41 +0000 UTC]

Except any editor or proper English teacher will tell you otherwise(as will any grammar check on a computer). And no, it's not a 'personal choice' any more than how you're/your or their/there/they're is used.

You're actually the only person I've met who claims to have been taught this way. And it's totally incorrect. I don't know who told you it was right, but they were misinformed.

BoomerBOmb [2012-11-01 16:19:03 +0000 UTC]

"Grammar Nazi" was originally a derogatory term people used to insult those who would correct people's spelling. Now it's less of a insult and more a common term simply because it's been over used. What I'm getting at is that it's the fault of the people who hate having their grammar corrected, because they were attempting to shame, insult and compare someone to one of the most hated groups of people of the 20th century because they hated the fact that someone caught them using the wrong "your".

Man, I thought you were against soapbox/strawman argument webcomics?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

kevinbolk In reply to BoomerBOmb [2012-11-01 16:51:51 +0000 UTC]

I'm not "against" them per se, but I do believe they're overused and oftentimes poorly executed. Though I would argue this pokes fun at a term and people who embrace it rather than misrepresenting an argument and then refuting it (straw man) or bluntly stating an opinion passionately or self-importantly (soapboxing). Well...I tend to come off as self-important, but I rreeeeeeaaally try not to. ;_;

BoomerBOmb In reply to kevinbolk [2012-11-01 17:57:58 +0000 UTC]

I guess it's hard not to make your opinions obvious in a comic, especially when you are your own mascot.
