Ok, I've gotta say, that's a really awesome comeback to that.

LOL that's true. It was actually supposed to be a Code Geass reference but it works for that too.

One of my friends actually thinks I was a kamikaze pilot in a previous life after I traumatized her with my atrocious driving.

kevinbolk In reply to blkwhtrbbt [2012-11-01 15:18:20 +0000 UTC]

I was waiting for that. ;D Except a straw man only applies when there is misrepresentation of an argument. This is more of an exchange than an argument and it's kinda hard to misrepresent "Nazis are bad" in this context. Though it's very similar in structure, so I totally understand the confusion.

blkwhtrbbt In reply to kevinbolk [2012-11-01 15:22:08 +0000 UTC]

I said it because well...you said you are always trying to have a perfect grammar, but you still are very humble to the point for not showing your perfect grammar to everybody...you only show it if the person needs help! xD

We need more humble people in this world...

I use the word nazi in that form too.
What was funny was explaining it to a person from Poland who also took the term nazi too literally.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CaptainQuirk In reply to kyoshiroelric [2012-11-03 06:01:51 +0000 UTC]

There's no "too literally." "Nazi" refers to "Nazi" for a reason.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kyoshiroelric In reply to CaptainQuirk [2012-11-03 14:41:26 +0000 UTC]

Well I'm certainly not killing Jews or am part of the National Socialist German Workers' Party even if I use the word "nazi."

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CaptainQuirk In reply to kyoshiroelric [2012-11-03 23:55:00 +0000 UTC]

No, not for using the word. But if you use a word that is likely to make people uncomfortable because it refers to something horrible, you can't really blame them for getting uncomfortable. If you use it as a joke instead of in the proper historical context, some people might think you're making light of it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kyoshiroelric In reply to CaptainQuirk [2012-11-04 01:04:07 +0000 UTC]

I didn't make the person from Poland uncomfortable, her English isn't the greatest and she didn't understand which way I meant it, she thought since I used the term "nazi" it meant that I didn't like something but I was referring to keeping something in captivity like the concentration camps. A lot of people make light of the Holocaust, I'm not one of them but I do know several people who do.

MandySeley In reply to ??? [2012-11-01 14:28:31 +0000 UTC]

I hate that term, too. If your "cute joke" references one of the worst genocides in human history... it's not really very cute or funny...

I used to be really annoying about grammar, too. One of my professors ended a sentence in a preposition in an email. I pointed it out, and she responded with a mini lesson, explaining how that's a myth, how it's perfectly proper (especially in conversational, non-formal text) to end sentences with prepositions, as long as they aren't extraneous. There were citations and examples provided. That put a stop to my "trying to prove how smart I am" attitude really fast.

Then I got to be on the receiving end when someone interrupted me, mid-sentence in a casual spoken conversation, to insist "you mean 'she and I.'" They knew me well enough to know it wasn't a habitual error, but that one slip-up just had to be corrected immediately, they couldn't let it slide. Ugh.

(/cool story bro)

I totally hear you. I try to use correct grammar n' stuff whenever possible, but I (and most people I know) find unsolicited grammar checking ten times more annoying than bad grammar. It's a definite sign of a personality with something to prove.

That said, I encourage people to do so on my comics 'cuz it turns the entire internet into my personal staff of unpaid editors.

MandySeley In reply to kevinbolk [2012-11-01 14:58:36 +0000 UTC]

Makes perfect sense to correct things that are going to be published. I'd hope people would point it out if I make a mistake on a comic or something, too!

...although now that I know your cunning plot, I think I'm going to bill you for cookies if I ever catch a typo...
