Actually, I'm pretty sure that I read in a couple strategy guides that the last name is indeed Mario. I'm pretty sure it was... I think the Mario Party 4 strategy guide and one of the Mario&Luigi Series strategy guides.

Yeah, but they're changing all sorts of things: Koopalings aren't Bowser's kids, Mario isn't their last name, they aren't from Brooklyn, etc.

To be fair Nintendo never claimed their last names was Mario or that they originated from Brooklyn. Those were from the cartoons and movie, which are not canon. The only 2 games that could say they were from NY is Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. After that it was all about the Mushroom Kingdom.

This is true, to a degree; at least on the last names, I think. I'm pretty sure they claimed Brooklyn originally-- I think it may have even started with them, and they certainly did little/nothing to quell it. When you let that kind of lore build up for a while, then yank it out from under people who love the characters (like the Koopalings thing)... well, they often don't like that, you know?

Agreed, I loved that movie too, wasn't a fan of Bowser, but I liked what they did with it. No it's not -the mario brothers- like we all know and love, but it's definitely a form of them.

It's actually pretty cool! I never would have guessed the movie was a cyberpunk restyling of the series. hearing that though made me understand the movie a little better. Loved it in any case.Β
