This seems to be the truth... the awful smelly truth!Β

I don't doubt it. No soft soap or toilet paper will do that to ya. Whenever I for some reason wish I lived in a different time, I remember chamber pots to appreciate today more.Β

Actually, Personal baths have been around since Roman Emperor Hadrian. Only the wealthy could afford baths and good hygiene. It was the commoner and peasants that stinked. But that problem was solved in some part to France's Napoleon. After declaring himself emperor of France, he introduced to concept of bathing, vaccinations, and clean water to the French commoner. And the US had(again for the wealthy) some sort of water plumbing, but still had outdoor latrines. True and efficient plumbing wasn't until around 15 years after the Civil War.

Whatever happened to Kevin Bolk? I haven't heard a word from him since he gave us this useless history lesson.Β And he still hasn't finished "Trigger Star".
Did he get bored with cartooning? Did he get a real job? If so, why hasn't he told us?
Or does he just not care anymore?

Why wouldn't they be, showers weren't invented for a few 100 years and bathing in the water would make them get dysentery due to the lack of toilets as well. So during the winter they buried something else than seeds....

...they buried EACH OTHER.

Indeed. Β It wasn't until the 1920's that the US started to set the health standards that we have today.

The vikings were quite hygenic. They had weekly baths, washed their faces daily, had tweezers, ear spoons, and strong soap etc. Nothing on the Muslims who used running water and individual baths though.

Love the shading in this one, it has a lot of depth.

Do I detect just a touch of Kate Beaton's influence here? It's the sort of thing she might write and illustrate, though in a very different style.Β

I wouldn't go as far as to say "everyone in history". After all, people in the High middle age had a better hygiene than in the early modern period.

Except in middle ages England, prior to the Black Death. Inviting house guests to bathe with you, upon inviting them into your home, often was a cultural norm at the time, and the only time in history that the production of soap reached almost industrial levels prior to the industrial revolution. It was Pope Clemont the VI who struck down this practice, saying that communal bathing was immoral. The practice of regular bathing (both alone and communal) got the proverbial nail in the coffin at the time of the Black Death due to popular misunderstandings of how the disease spread. Β
