Description A quote that I came up with myself while thinking about some personal things. I decided that I wanted to write it down, make it look good, and show it to other people and inspire them to also be happy despite what may be wrong in their lives.

Color Choices: I took my colors from the flags of the two sexualities stated, which are here ([link] ). Gay is a rainbow, straight is black and white, but I chose to make the straight shades of grey because even being straight there is no black and white, but shades of grey and so many variations.

---------

Fonts used: Helvetica Neue, Cochin ([link] ), Fontin ([link] ), Fertigo Pro ([link] ), Futura

Note: This was originally intended to be a personal portfolio piece, but it is now available as a print here on Deviantart for purchase, if you're so inclined. If you're interested in a size larger than what is offered through the print shop, send me a note and we can work something out.

For sale: This design is available for purchase on a number of products at [link]
---------

Edit: Thanks everyone for all the faves, comments, and for front page. This is my first deviation to get there and the one with the most faves/comments. Thank you all so much!

Straight is shades of grey because I took the main color choice from the flag ([link] ) and changed it because even being straight there is no black and white, but shades of grey.

because its a culture that is struggling to be accepted hence the positive outlooks on it. Nothing wrong with that.

and being straight isn't dull...its just "normal"

once everybody has their legal right to marry unfettered, in a few generations they'll be no better than straight married couples.

I can't wait till gays can marry and have the same rights as straights....i just hope it doesn't mean the end of the pride parades. Those are fun and a great reminder of being happy and proud about who you are be it straight or gay ^_^

Nothing wrong with a positive outlook on it.
Im just saying that being gay is no better than being straight or vice versa.
So portraing beings straight as boring compared to being gay is stupid.

Also gay couples can get married in my country so that is probably the reason for my views on this.
Its the same either way, one should not play favorites.

And yes being straight is the most common, but why does society consider love to be less special when it is between a two human beings of opposite sex than when it is between two human beings of same sex?

Normal is a relative term. What may be considered normal by some, might be considered unnatural by others.
It is not a word that can be used to desribe weather or not something is good.

What bothers me it that when one looks at this picture, the word 'gay' is colourfull and appealing.
While 'straight' is colourless and dull.

Im not annoyed because gay is portrayed positively.
Im annoyed because they are not both portayed positively.

yeah, if i were to have read into it like that I woulda been mildly perturbed at the portrayal of the word "straight"

And yes being straight is the most common, but why does society consider love to be less special when it is between a two human beings of opposite sex than when it is between two human beings of same sex? <--- because its not "trendy" right now, IMO and those that accuse hetero love as being less special than homo love are defeating their own arguments for equality. Equality is for everyone, not just for the oppressed.

I read a comment on here about black and white are the colors of the straight flag....i wasn't aware of a straight flag.

Nazgul100 In reply to ZombieHun [2012-06-25 20:50:38 +0000 UTC]

Well I have a tendancy to read into things like that, im pretty sure that when youre portraying a message through art (even art as simple as this) there is a reason for why everything looks the way it does. And if you dont really mean anything by the way you portrait your message then I believe youre doing it wrong.

And in my opinion, homo-love is worth no more or less than hetero love.
But then again, Ive never really been much of a trend follower.

I have actually heard about that straight flag but I always thought it was a bad joke... if there actually is a straigh flag and it is black and white it was probably made by an extremely boring individual, so why dont we let it represent extremely boring individuals instead? Seems more fitting that way.

As a straight individual, am more offended of the alleged straight flag lol Obviously wasn't created by an artist or anybody who is versed in making flag designs.

Homo-love----Hetero-love...isn't love just love? you're right.

If you think being gay automatically means everything is just happy times and sunshine all around youre dumb.
If you think being straight automatically means life is boring and everything seems plain and dull youre dumb.

Weather youre homosexual or heterosexual has nothing to do with how ones outlook on life is.
It is an individual experiance that is not decided by what sex you find yourself attracted to.

That's the problem, too many people choose happiness over doing the right thing. They are not one and the same. The right thing is to keep your sexuality private and not define yourself by the method you choose to stimulate the nerve endings in your genitals.

Your happiness only matters to you, and it serves no benefit to the world.

You pose a very intriguing sense of mind, Playcircus. It's hard to put my finger on it. Though I may agree that doing the right thing and doing what makes you happy isn't always one in the same (such as illegal substances may make you happy but it's not right for your body's system), I can't agree with you that happiness in general cannot benefit the world. Nor do I agree with the perplexing statement you made that implies sexual definition is decided purely upon lustful feelings. May I ask for clarification?

Playcircus In reply to multipledivinity [2012-06-25 15:53:55 +0000 UTC]

I think the most rewarding things in life are the hardest, the most painful, and require the most sacrifice. The reward is integrity, value, and worth - not self-satisfaction. Parasites are concerned with their own well-being, and the opposite of that is being concerned with the well-being of everything excluding yourself. The latter is godly, and the most good.

To be completely self-denying would be constant misery, but what could be more righteous? I see nothing righteous at all about pursuing your own happiness and contentedness.

As far as what defines sexuality, I believe it is purely lust. Love can be shared as equally between two people in a sexual relationship and two people in a platonic one. It was even suggested by Plato that relationships between two people who are not physically drawn to one another are much more true. It's only a subjective perception that sharing emotional intimacy with a close friend is taboo.

To involve physical intimacy in a relationship is to revert back to a troglodyte. It is thoughtless, irrational, and apish behavior to pursue physical pleasure. If you consider and understand the reasons your body compels you to grind your genitals into another person, then you will probably object to it if you also consider the perilous future that awaits us if we can't resist our immediate instincts. Physical pleasure is now an enormous threat to the progress of man, and serves no purpose for a sentient, modern person.

So, while I believe that homosexuality is a representation of inconsiderate lust and wanting, I also believe that heterosexuality without calculated procreational purpose is deleterious as well.

There is another advantage I believe heterosexuality holds over homosexuality, and that is beauty. My opinion is always met with controversy, but I hold it still. Beauty is measured by a very specific set of laws, and it is a science. One example of an irrefutable scientific principle of beauty is the rule-of-thirds, which explains that in the composition of a scene, the primary subject should only occupy a third of the entire image. This is a proven method of optimal beauty and inspires the most desirable response from the observer.

Comparing homosexuality to heterosexuality, you can apply many of these laws to determine which concept entices the greatest feeling a beauty in the brain: function, symmetry, complimentary elements, and sensory association. Most of these ideas favor heterosexuality, and also homosexuality between two females, rather than two males. It is the reason, I believe, that most men and women are more accepting towards lesbian relationships than a pairing of males.

It isn't to say that a homosexual pairing between two men does not have the potential to be beautiful, it is just the least likely. Many would like to blame homophobia on religious teachings and bigotry, but I believe it has much more to do with with the mindless desire to mate, the confusion of the brain to desire a mate that cannot produce offspring, and the violation of the scientific standard of beauty. People do not find homosexuality pleasant or favorable for these reasons.

When people feel they are owed acceptance based on their sexuality, and their desire to be happy, I believe they are expecting others to embrace something greedy, wanting, irrational, and beneficial only to themselves. Of course, no one wants to believe something they want could be wrong, so they victimize themselves.

If you are intrigued by my musings, it may be because I take a completely different stance on all topics than the majority - purposefully. Some may call it non-conformism, but I believe strongly that if you are doing it the same as everyone else, you are not doing it better.

I see. That is oddly exactly what I thought you meant. Thank you for your opinion. I wanted to be completely sure of it prior to speaking my experience. Do understand, I know your opinions are completely up to you. I'm not out to change them. Your thoughts are very scientifically based rather than religious, which is easier for me to respect at this moment.

I, as are a few commentaries in this deviation, am a lesbian. However, my 'common label' as you may see it as, has not been because of my genital region at all. I have never been comfortable around men in any shape or form. This varies from standing close in a tight space, becoming more than acquaintances, and even more than friends. My first relationship had been with a boy who had been a good friend at first, but had not made me feel comfortable in my own existance, self-beauty, and obsessed over me for me to obsess over myself. I do not like thinking much of my own person. That was the same time I had met my current girl. I fell in love with her with purity rather than pleasure. I wanted to be there for her, raise her out of the gloom of her life, and came to find out she did the same for me without me asking.

So forgive me, sir, if I do not agree with your opinion about gay/lesbian existence being about the sex or throb of genitals. But after all, we are all given our minds to shape it in our own way, as with our lives.

Thank you for responding. Good day.

There must be some part of your relationship that is based on desire for physical intimacy because the only difference between man and woman is physical. To engage in a relationship with a female, because she is female; your sexuality, i.e. you're desire to mate, must have been the determining factor; otherwise, it wouldn't matter to you whether she were male or female.
