Elite Dangerous: Avatar Commissions  Good day fellow CMDRs! I am a big fan of Elite: Dangerous. Over the last couple months I have been generating art for The People's Media, a subgroup of the Facebook Community, Aisling Duval. I have had a tremendous amount of requests for commissions and so I have decided to give it a go! Please check out my conditions below.
Thank you for your support CMDRs! I was recognized by Frontier in their 85 newsletter for ED development. This was exciting news to me!

Excellent work sir - brilliant ship design here too

How long did it take to do?

I spent about 45 minutes on the background and an hour or so on the character.
I spend the most time on the face which isn't very long.
The setup is the hard part as I have to match the clients descriptions, find a creative way to represent all of their symbols and play style, and so on.
I spend a few hours doing that, sometimes even more in my head while I'm trying to sleep.

I did not design the ship though.  It's an Imperial Clipper from the Elite Dangerous game.  Sadly that makes it even harder as I have to make the well known ship recognizable instead of inventing my own design.  Also reference is very limited since the game's player base is still small.

I know what you mean - you have ideas, recommendations, thoughts, concepts but in the final hour the customer makes the decision.

Been there on numerous pictures and commissions.

Even so, you did fantastic work on the ship - it looks damn lethal, and the lass' face - excellent work - I cannot do that

In short - damn sterling work sir!

Oh I bet you can do this.  Based on your work so far either the only thing keeping you is the tools you are using and level of detail.
The biggest thing for me was learning about Level of Detail (LOD).  I used to work as detailed as you but most people assumed if it was a person I painted that it was just a simple photograph.  There is something important about learning to work with a larger brush and making each stroke really matter.

I also avoid brushes that sprinkle detail such as one you often use for explosions.  I can send some great tutorials that avoid this as it contributes to the problem I will state next.

Textures in art.  If you are going to use texture make sure it is not evenly distributed across the canvas at the same density, scale, and strength.  This will cause the scene to look very flat.  The best way to create depth is to have a subject matter where detail and texture is focused.  I can send examples to clarify.

I follow your work and love the war scenes.  I think with the right brush you could really pull off the movement you are striving for.

Well sir thank you for this strong and sterling support - am always open to improvement

So if you have any, just note me when you can

I will admit I do what you say a lot - but (so far) it works

LOD - I could do with a crash course on that
