Description
Staging the birth of the most evil character in the Old Testament book of Judges - Abimelek.Though his birth by Gideon's concubine, Drouma, is only mentioned in passing, it was my intention to show his birth was as violent as his life. I felt compelled to make this piece.
All of the casting fell into place. The brilliant model and friend, was always to be Drouma. It was no surprise to me that in the weeks previous, she told me she had shaved her head. Perfect...We let it grow out two more weeks and took shears to it as if she had cut it off in a fever of madness. Nev...you are fearless and brilliant. Then baby Zane and his mother Nathalie (who plays the midwife) were the next obvious choices. How much can I praise a woman who let's me cover her newborn in fake blood?
Then Athena (left) and Sylvie (right) as Drouma's attendants. Sylvie....your astounding face. You became the voice for this piece. Brave women all, in a very very difficult and exhausting shoot.
Though these images are only the digital reference shots, I hope and pray that the actual film captured what you all brought to the stage. I am proud of you all.....

This artwork just made me think, that no matter how powerfull something or someone becomes, good or bad, it usually has a very fragile beggining. Love it.

This was excellent! Though I wasn't sure who exactly Abimelek was at first, I studied the artwork for sometime. The child, though, was the center and brilliantly presented. Slowly, the blood and rags did present quite a bit of gruesome awe. And from there, the positions and brilliant people involved, along with facial expressions, did the rest of the work. Amazing, glorious, and deep. Thank you!

Simple perfect. The emotions portrayed by the models is amazing. Though your creativity and talent definitely boasts the over-all credit I'm sure. The shot is dark and beautiful the contrast and coloration are perfect.

And also the most grace-filled. People are very good at enacting horror upon each other....hence me doing this whole series...

Well and also if it weren't for Grace, Judges would have been about 2 chapters long...God could have just let the Israelites get themselves wiped out. The vicious cycle of human nature. Acting in love, then getting selfish again, rebellion and violence, crappy consequences because of it, then calling out for help, repentance, delivery and then repeat...

Perhaps if they didn't feign goodness out of fear of a cosmic tyrant, they might've had a genuine, lasting peace. Fear never brings about true love for one another.

kevissimo In reply to solomonsea [2011-07-24 09:27:57 +0000 UTC]
Not fear...a genuine seeing into the mirror of who they were and what they did. For if God were a tyrant then there would be no mirror to look into. Too easy to blame God for man's follies. For if we cling to a sense of justice in the face of a Creator, then where does that sense of justice come from? From ourselves? We somehow are better than the one who created us? We are better to think that we are all an accident of chance that to blame God for our own folly. Don't speak out of your own anger at someone you presume to understand, but who is in fact much much different than you want to believe. Too easy, my friend...

Whether you like it or not, morality comes from within. Why do you think Biblical morality has been interpreted and reinterpreted countless times over the millennia? Why do you think most of those laws are deemed to no longer apply?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
kevissimo In reply to solomonsea [2011-09-08 06:04:24 +0000 UTC]
I really don't want to get into a debate over this. But you must admit, to only see the horror of what people are capable of and dismiss the love and grace that is abundant around it and which works to contend with the evil, is a choice on your part. The Law was intended for Israelites alone for a specific period of time and not for anyone else. The Law was then embodied and completed by the Messiah and no longer applies. It has nothing to do with interpretation or reinterpretation...but I understand your anger. The Bible has been used as a weapon of control for too long by those who do not know it's true message. That abuse poisons the well and has done for quite some time. What we try to do...is correct that. I just believe that there IS a good behind what has been misued by others...
