Description 2001. I was in Hoima, Uganda.
The medical team had gone into the prison there to examine and treat the inmates. I was forbidden to enter. No photographers had ever been allowed inside.
Then just before dusk I got the message. They were going to allow me in for 15 minutes...did I want to go?
I flew over to the compound in the teams Landrover. The light was dying and I wasn't allowed to use a flash.

The compound itself was layed out in a square with the cells forming the perimeter around a dirt courtyard. There the prisoners shuffled like ghosts, not allowed to speak unless spoken to. The guards were very wary of me. Why they allowed me in, I to this day don't know.
I discovered that most inmates there were in for petty crimes, mostly for fighting with their neighbor. It wasn't until later that I realized that most serious crimes such as murder are dealt with immidiately in the street. They never live to see a prison. Thievery is dealt with in the very same way.

So, I took my shots. Then just as the light was almost gone. (I was down to 1/15 second at f: 1.9 pushing two stops) I saw this man in the far corner in his cell. I don't know why I went over. I was already being ushered out. I felt compelled to go. Just then he flashed me a peace sign with the most genuine and joyful smile. Perhaps it was a thank you for the work the team did, perhaps it was irony or perhaps it was something deeper. In my heart I feel it was indeed something deeper.

Peace in the midst of a situation that warrants none. That was a true peace.

So...peace to you, my brother. Whoever you are....

Oh my God.....That is so deep. It's almost beyond words...Why doesn't it have more +favs?!?

This picture holds so many things....The irony that the man is in the one place where peace seems forsaken, yet he's wishing it upon others....Just the fact that he still believes that peace walks those halls, that he has faith that someday he will know it. His strength shines in this shot, because I know that if it were me...I would have broken. That cell would have broken me. I admire him for all these things. And I admire you for being able to capture them, and share them with me. Astounding shot, as always.

I think in another life I would be a journalist....Not that I haven't done alot of that kind of work....I do love it and I think I do well in that context....

alot of it has to do with me worrying about my parents as I'm out God knows where with bullets flying....

Your comment about journalistic contexts resonated....you do do well in those contexts (as well as others, of course.) But I think there's something to that particular leaning...the capacity to give image and voice to dark places where the light can shine the brightest. I think perhaps it could be the thing which will launch you to that next level where (I think) you want to go...the drive to those places. The technical skill and expressiveness of the technique are solid enough to support that particular breathtaking spontaniety...a special gift there.

that was god damn beautiful. many photographers merely exist to observe and document. some photographers document what they are involved in. your words for this image are honest and brutaly effective and you actions were couragous and admirable. this should be fav'd by every damn viewer that witnesses this.

great peice man,yep refering to when they deal with you in the street's remind's me a bit like a kangaroo court which they do in zimbabwe, they catch wherever you are caught let say in the street and trie you right there, did'nt really take any shit either, the local's would beat those that are caught very badly, you from america but you have lot's of experiance's in africa?

Some..... was there twice for short periods. The second time is when i saw it actually happening when I was staying in Kampala....I almost got caught in it when the guy driving in front of us killed a guy on a bike and I got out to help. My driver nearly had to pull me back into the car. The mob had descended in less than a minute. He saved my life.
