"You can't keep going on like this," she said"But you don't understand...there's something there. There's something to this and I have to understand it...grasp it. Don't you believe me?"
"No," she whispered to a spot on the wall. It was a spot that she cleaned months ago after the fight and though no one could see, she always made sure. He was wearing his rosary again. "You're leaving again, aren't you?"
"I'll be back," he said. "I promise."
She nodded. This is how it went with her parents.
"Take your scarf. Chicago's cold."
"It's all in the car. I have everything."
Everything....
The word swam to a melody she knew but couldn't remember the name of. In the morning this kitchen will clean, she thought. She'll make sure of it.

While I like the writing, I can't really envision what it is you are trying to get out in the passage.
Your image quite pales against the prose in my opinion, however, I am probably missing something.
Perhaps you can set me straight, as It seems to be keeping me up late thinking to hard. It must be a rather personal piece.
