The armed forces of Greece consist of:
+ The Hellenic National Defense General Staff
+ The Hellenic Army
+ The Hellenic Navy
+ The Hellenic Air Force
The civilian authority for the Greek military is the Ministry of National Defense.
Greece currently has universal compulsory military service for males, under which all men above 18 years of age serve for 9 months. Women may serve in the Greek military, but cannot be conscripted. According to NATO, in 2008, Greece spent 2.8 percent of G.D.P. on its military, or about €6.9 billion, or around $9.3 billion. Greece is the largest importer of conventional weapons in Europe and its military spending is the highest in the European Union (relative to G.D.P).
Greece is an EU and NATO member country and participates in peacekeeping operations such as ISAF- in Afghanistan, EUFOR in Bosnia and Chad, and KFOR in Kosovo.

Χωρίς εθνικιστικές εξάρσεις μπορώ να πω ότι η Κύπρος ήταν πάντα και παραμένει κομμάτι του Ελληνισμού.

It remember my periof on the Army - Cavalry - in the time of the nowadays desappeared horses.
The place was a School for Officials,I I'm proud to be the one which was approved on the Survival Tests.
The National Day, 7th September,
was raining, and despite of it, the boots were marching ganz passing...and the sincronizating from the band of the troup with the band from the official stand...memories..very good memories. Thank for this picture !

Cavalry with real horses? Thats cool! My memories from the army are not that great... I was at the Greek-Turkish border in Evros river about 12 years ago. It was a rough winter with lots of snow... I have a few shots at the beginning of my gallery...

Thanks, Kevrekedis. I'll wathch the earlies form you gallery.
Personally, I banned Turlish memeber for the most diversifyed reasons.
One, came from the Chistian perion in Armenia.
And in Armenia, the genocide from the beginning of
last century.
i had said last year to them; you're not muslims.
Just Turkish.
And the behavior from this people in my country it's not different.
All the immigrants from the Medium Orient hate them.
Wow. Your probes in the army was more difficulted than mine, I heard. But I gave support for the here compulsory Army incorporation. Controversial or not the military rules, at least, when I received an superior order, and was not on agreement,I had the right to receive that order written !
Cavalry ? Really. The best horses for jump, the bad ones for cross-country ! And it wasn't not so bad.
The mosst intelligent horse was given to me: was not an horse, but a horse crossing with a dunkey. Aged 15 years (!), he was called Galan, and gave a lot of my effort until the final domain ! We both were winners ! For the Greek ancestrality, dunkeys have a
dignifyed meaning, yes ?!
I confirm it !
Nowadays, the cavalry is strictly for cerimonies, not more used at the same school of mine, and the unit of these beings makes a fine job on EQUOTHERAPY from Regis, BR

Thank you Melvin! Yes, they still use the G3s. This is a boot camp, I don't know what they use in the units, it's been more than 10 years that I was in service...
