I dont get it...people make choices...I mean things have changed but all things considered you can even do both at the same time. Life is great for that.

I think part of the problem is that parents now are afraid to let their kids play outside due to kidnappers, snakes, etc.

Yeah, there is that fear. I had to experience that when I was eight. I couldn't go out front without supervision, so I had to be stuck in my backyard. I think it was because there were reports of child kidnappings and my relatives didn't want me to get abducted. Thankfully, that method wore off, probably because the neighborhood I lived in was very quiet and news of kidnapping or other crimes were pretty much nonexistent. I'm not sure I can say the same for it now, though. One of the key factors is where you live and what's common there.

And once kids get to 8-10, the back yard just isn't big enough, unless they live on a ranch like I did.

Yep. My family has a cattle ranch in Montana. When I was a kid, I walked two miles to my grandparent's place. (There were no neighbors between us.)

Nice that you still live there.
Are you experiencing a dry season?

Oh yes. It's so dry the area is now considered some kind of state emergency, and some people are having to sell cattle.

Since the snow melted. We've had less than four inches since then. Around here, last year was dry too, so there isn't much old grass either. Luckily, my family has enough grass on our ranch, so we're okay.

depends where you live. Surely there is a certain danger at some places but in other, it simply doesnt happen ever. In my opinion its also the parents responsibility to make sure their kids go outside and are safe. And that is simply not always possible, because there are other importances to take care of. Electronic devices keep a child occupied without having to look over it 24/7. And thats in my opinion a problem

I'm suspicious that maybe things in some areas aren't more dangerous, but the parents feel like they are. An example is our new neighbor, who is a city girl now living in the country. When I was the age of her older kids, I'd walk two miles to grandma's house. I don't think her kids ever leave the yard because SNAKES!. (She mows the yard obsessively.)

Yep. Snakes try to avoid people, not attack them.

True. The only venomous ones here are rattlesnakes, and though they can be mean, they rarely just bite something without warning.
