I have mixed feelings about this couple. One, I'm not that into gay couples, and two, I doubt this will ever happen at all. But... there have been moments in the games and Sonic X that I just couldn't deny that they were either cute or showing that these two genuinely care for one another.
In SA2, ShadowΒ and Sonic were batting the Final Hazard and Shadow tosses all these compliments at Sonic (including where he called him the Ultimate Lifeform). And, likewise, Sonic is getting rapidly concerned about Shadow's condition and wants him safe at the ARK.
In Sonic X, in the second to last episode when Sonic is about to power up the canon solo, Shadow jumps in with him and they smile at each other before facing potential death together (earlier on, it was implied Sonic wouldn't survive the Dark Oak attack).
In Sonic 06, Shadow saves Sonic from being killed by Silver. Shadow could have chosen to battle Sonic himself, but he lets him go and defends his honour against Silver instead. Later on in the game, Shadow is hit pretty hard by Sonic's death, to the point where he can't bare to look at Sonic's body and unfolds his arms in the process. Even while searching for theΒ red emerald, his theme has a haunting tone.Β Then, in the Solaris battle, we have these quotes:
Sonic: (To Silver) Do you still have ring energy? Use the Y/Triangle Button to switch with me.
Silver: (To Shadow) Hey, you're running short on rings! Use the Y/Triangle Button to switch with me.
Shadow: (To Sonic) Are you ok? Use the Y/Triangle Button to switch with me.
While Sonic/Silver are concerned that Silver/Shadow are running low on rings, Shadow is concerned if Sonic's ok. That's quite a lot coming from someone who considers Sonic to be his arch rival.
