Description I am working on a new ink technique to make the scales more realistic and 3D. I hope to get this perfected and eventually start working on using something similar for paint for large scale works.

The old technique is outside the circle, the new one is in the center of the circle.

Originally I just outlined the scales, added some scribbling on the scales to show some 3D effect, then used hatching to do an over-all shade/shape to the dragon. When the ink was done I put in the blood red highlights in chunks like the scales weren't there (relying on the outlines to show there was scales) and then shaded with the carbon pencil.

New technique is relying more so on the ink shading aspect. I use a combination of stippling, scribble, hatching, and line weight variance to really work the shape of the muscles while putting the raised effect between the scales. I then put in the blood red shimmer individually on each scale before shading with the carbon pencil.
