Description On the street near Harvard Square.

He was very nice. Said he didn't mind people taking his picture as long as they asked, which I did.

And yes, I gave him some money.

this shot almost makes me cry. it may sound corny, but i want to be a vet. animals mean so much more to me than humans.

...never quite know what to make of such shots.

I suppose I never really feel sorry for street people, not having a home IS what it is. The attachment of pity or sadness to the homeless is more about us and our view of them than where their minds are personally at. He appears to be able to feed himself, his animals don't appear to be bad off, he doesn't have the stresses of family, career, debt, or responsibility beyond the care of his pets. At that age, one's lot in life is the result of millions of personal choices surrounding common yet random life events and he is exactly where he has placed himself.

In fact, barring mental illness which might be a different issue entirely, he isn't trapped in any way when you think about it, free to do what he wants when he wants. Some find peace and comfort in that. Some find strength in that.

The pets? The pets are lounging with their friend and have no regard for the material posessions we hold dear.

This is a fantastic photo, it documents life and makes me ponder the greater picture. Thanks for sharing a slice of your diversity.

What gets to me are the animals. I think it's right you don't have more of his face. It's like, I'm not the only one I'm trying to feed, I have this cat and dog, too. I'll bet they eat before he does.

i agree that the animals are an important part of this photo...i've heard comments that the homeless shouldn't have an animal since they can't even feed themselves...but when i see someone on the side of the road asking for spare change, and their dog is sitting faithfully by them, i am thankful they have at least friendship and loyalty - the way only an animal can give.

during summer they can live a relatively "easy" life (don't get me wrong, they do not have an easy life, not at all), they don't have to worry, about snow, cold, wind,...
during winter I really feel sorry for them.
when i lived in Oslo, there was a guy who lived on the street, all year round.
during winter, there were a couple of people who provided him with some food ( brought breakfast on my way to work).
that's a couple of years past - i wonder what happend to him...
(sorry for getting off topic)

Maybe.... I was thinking more about the animals, I think. Also, I don't like to get up in people's faces. I shoot first, ask afterwards. If they say no I can just delete the picture, eh?
