Description

the great reefs easily has the most diverse ecosystem in the ocean, with hundreds of thousands of species living alongside the equally varied reef people.

One of the most interesting creatures of the odd reef denizens are the several pygmy creatures that call the giant coral reef crevices their home, pygmies such as the shrimp pygmy blur the line between the sentient races of the reef and the other creatures they consider 'animals', as the pygmy shrimp has a fairly structured social community and has mastered the usage of simple tools to achieve their means. Just that they don't have any form of written language or any other complex way to share thoughts and ideas among each other than simply mimicking what one shrimp was doing. the reef people do treat them differently than the other creatures because of their higher intelligence, in some cases pygmy shrimps has even learned to trade resources they have collected in exchange with materials made by the reef people. The pygmy shrimps are mostly in peaceful terms with the reef people although they never collaborate with each other in things such as tribal battles, or defending the reef from raiders. Other pygmies that live in the reefs include some more intelligent community of cuttlefish pygmies and octopuses that are more aggressive and occasionally attacks the shrimps or even reef people .

other reef creatures that the reef tribes has utilized in their society are the sea turtles, there are many different turtles in the reef and each can serve different purposes, like the whale turtles that provide a ride for the tribe chiefs, or the bulkier and slower blockade turtles that can be trained like companion animals to fend off attackers and protect an area of blockade. The blockades reef tribes use themselves utilizes animals from the reef. Great urchins are collected and tied in place in front of the reef crevices that the tribes use as their village fort and  'bunkers' during  attacks, or the stinging jellyfish that they tie to seaweed ropes in the thousands to cover up their seaweed farms to hopefully prevent raiders and other tribes from taking them.

there are still many more reef denizens that are not depicted in the concept and that i wish i could've covered had i had the time. like the moray beasts the tribe fears, the different giant crustaceans ranging from the lobsters the tribes use as large resource transports and caravans, or the giant ray creatures from the mura kingdom that annually passes by the reefs to get cleaned by the reef creatures.
