Being a Champion doesn't make him a Pokemon Master and the definition of one is up for interpretation. This is just one step to being a master but there's more to it.

true but beating the ones who beat him before to be the overall champ does show ash learning from his mistakes although it would be a poor showing if every (hypothetical) match would just be the exact same ones ash had with the competitor but tweaked to have ash win.

Basically, the pokΓ©mon that has heart eyes has a crush on James, and each time she comes out of her Pokeball, she poisons James to make him look like his previous PokΓ©mon mate.
