Description
Download for full size!!!!!!!Look! Kilala finally did a tutorial! I planned to do a "How to Draw Ponies" tutorial, but there are so many of those. So, since you guys think that I'm pretty good at portraying emotions, I stuck to that. That being said, these tips will prolly only help you if you know how to draw ponies already XP (let me know if you can't read any of this)

General Emotions
When doing these, pay attention to the ears, neck and shoulders.

Head Angles
Head angles (along with the head placement) are very important. My favorite one is the one looking up and tilting slightly. I tend to use this one a lot when dealing with arrogant characters like Prism, Nidra or Hot Head. Why? Because it makes them look condescending and above others. If you watch anime, you'll notice that a lot of the the "badass" or "evil villain" or even just cocky characters will do this when monologuing.

Eyes, Eyebrows, Eyelids
Eyes
- I strongly believe eyes are the most expressive features on the face. If you're trying to make a face, you're eyes could easily betray you.
- When doing eyes pay attention to the size of the eyes themselves, the irises and the pupils
- Big eyes, big irises and big pupils= Happiness, concern, sadness,
- Big eyes, big irises and small pupils= Happiness/surprise
- Big eyes, small irises and small pupils= Scared, pshyco, traumatized
Eyebrows
- Almost as expressive as the eyes
- I don't think they need further explanation
Eyelids
- Important for making characters look tired, unamused, calm, etc.

How to Better Understand Emotions
- GET. A. MIRROR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Really think about different scenarios and what you might do/how you might react in those situations
- Feel how your body reacts when make certain faces. (Do your shoulders drop? Do you pull your head back? Does your mouth open? What do your eyebrows do?)

I think the same rules will do with stallions, too. What I've seen, the way to separate male and female characters from each other are usually:
Female | Male
Bigger eyes / Smaller eyes (the eyes are as wide as female eyes, but not vertically as high)
Eyelashes / No eyelashes
Big iris and pupil in comparison to the rest of the eye (when neutral expression) / Smaller iris and pupil -ll-
These don't really work on ponies, but...
Shorter nose bridge / Taller nose bridge
Thin eyebrows / Thick eyebrows
Tiny chin, more V-shaped / Wider chin, more U-shaped
Smaller mouth, fuller lips / Wider mouth, thinner lips
Of course, when creating a character there are much exceptions, so these rules don't always stand. For example, In The Emperor's New Groove, Kuzco has very V-shaped shin, though it is long, and in Wreck-it Ralph Vanellope has quite thick eyebrows.

Can you do a quick tutorial on eyes? I could really use it. And one on legs...legs are always a challenge for me.

That's what I do too. It actually really helps but looks really weird. Especially if someone is watching...

Lol, same. I usually don't use a mirror(I might try it though ), I just make the face that I'm drawing.
Heh yeah. One time my sister saw me making faces it was awkward.

Really nice, you could literally make hundreds of different faces with that style. Are you just using Annie as an example?

Very neat. I'm fairly decent at conveying emotions in my drawings (I guess), but my problem tends to come down to the head angle. I was never able to master the "plus" shape thing. I could never fully grasp what I was supposed to do with it. I generally just do all my angles by eye.
Either way, this is great, and I think I can learn from it.

Very nice, you should do others! Like body language or texture or shading, etc. Only if you want to though!
