History:     When Sasha was little, his parents tended to a small garden they kept in the backyard. His mother and father planted many flowers and vegetables which all flourished when it was the three of them tending to the garden. All the effort and love put into nurturing the garden made the flowers and vegetables extra lovely. Harvesting the vegetables and putting them in his mom’s cooking made it taste extra special. The garden represented his family and seeing it so lively filled him up with so much happiness.

     Sasha’s mother and her sister spent much time together and were extremely close. Sasha and his cousin, Wren, also spent much time together in turn. They were close and Sasha considered him as a brother more than just a cousin.

    As years went by, the garden seemed dull. His father was too busy with his own separate business to bother with it and so it was just his mother and himself in the garden. It gave Sasha a strange sense of pity and sadness. Together the two of them harvested the vegetables and watered the flowers while his father was away.

    Soon after, his mother had a strange notion that something was off with Sasha’s father. Sasha remembered hiding behind his bedroom door as his parents argued in the living room. His mother was not the type to get angry and always had a soft gentle voice to her. He heard muffled voices but what he could understand was that his father was leaving them for somebody else. Pressing his ear closer to the door, he heard his father say “I love you both…but there is somebody else that I love dearly. I’ve left this person alone for a long time and now they need me so…” His father’s voice trailed off but it didn’t matter anymore because Sasha couldn’t focus anymore. He has never heard his mother cry before and it was the most painful thing he’s experienced.

After his father left, the garden looked almost barren. His family had fallen apart and the only thing he could do was watch from afar. He couldn’t bring himself to speak to his mother who seemed so sullen and filled with pain. His aunt kept his mother company much more often so than before and he also had Wren to confide in. Still it wasn’t enough and he wanted to do something to make his mother smile. There was a hydrangea bush that his mother loved deeply and it would be her pride and joy of the garden. At the moment, it was wilting, flowers scattered and dry around it. It was a sorry sight but Sasha’s plan was to nurse it back to health. No matter how much he took care of it though, it just continued to wither. In desperation to bring happiness to his mother’s face, he pleaded and begged for the plant to get better. He lightly touched the already fragile bush and prayed for it to get better. When he opened his eyes, the plant did indeed look healthier. Sasha continued this on for days until the plant was invigorated and more beautiful than ever. Upon showing his mother, she smiled brightly and praised Sasha who was selfless enough to do so much for her. It was not the hydrangeas but his effort and thoughts that she really appreciated.

            The following few days were peaceful and it was then that Sasha received the letter that would answer all his questions about his strange power…
