Description My tumblr is here---> imaginashon.tumblr.com/

I betcha some (or more, depending on which generation you come from) think that Walt Disney was the sole creator of Mickey Mouse. The truth is that Mickey was created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. A man no one was been able to beat his record of drawings per day in history (600-700 were drawn a night by him, for two weeks, to create Plane Crazy and Steamboat Willie, Mickey's two first shorts).

Since I’ve drawn Mickey with Walt (is on tumblr at the moment, not dA), I decided to draw him with his other creator, the lesser known one (sadly): animation great Ub Iwerks. While Disney gave Mickey his personality, Iwerks gave him his looks and animated his earliest shorts. After struggling with being in Disney’s shadow, Iwerks left and went to work on his own projects and then for other studios. In 1940, he returned to find work at the Disney studios.

I guess I feel that, after nearly a little over a decade of not seeing his other creator Mickey would be thrilled to see Iwerks again (My ToonZverse Headcanon!). The mouse would split his time between Walt and Iwerks. And Minnie, of course.

Since it’s Mickey’s (an Minnie's!) 85th birthday today (November 18th), I figured I’d finish this up and post it. Missed posting something for Bugs’ birthday back in July, derp!

To be completly Honest, i did not have a clue about this, sadly tough this is not the first time a co creator of something big has gone lost in the corridors of history.
I am a guy that live by the saying "Credit where credit is due" So i thank you for taking your time to tell us all this and i am sure Mr Ub Iwerks would have greatly appriciated what you did for him by drawing this.

It's impossible to not know who Walt Disney is unless you've lived under a rock all your life.

Ub Iwerks drew Mickey for the first time and animated the first cartoons.

The fact that you don't know who Walt is makes me think you are somewhat of an idiot.

Ub Iwerks is one of my idols. I even have the documentary, "The Hand Behind The Mouse: The Ub Iwerks" on Disc 2 of Walt Disney Treasures: The Adventures of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit DVD set. The documentary was directed by Ub Iwerks' own granddaughter, Leslie Iwerks. I did found while watching the documentary that Ub Iwerks is not just an artist, he's also an inventor and skilled in machinery.

Didn't know that. This kinda like the creation of Batman.  Most people assume that it was Bob Kane who created Batman. You'll see the guys name on just about every comic and film. However it was actually Bill Finger that helped create Batman as he created his iconic Bat cowl and cape. Cause Bob Kane had the idea, he took all the credit for creating Batman.

Ub Iwerks did do some great stuff, and not just Mickey either. He also worked on Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and the old Alice Comedies shorts, plus Flip the Frog and Willie Whopper (he opened his own studio for those) and later he did a few Porky Pig and Gabby Goat shorts. (Just mentioning all this for those who don't know).

Really sad that Oswald finally was returned to Disney Studios after both Walt and Ub died.

Very well done! Iwerks was the technical innovator for Walt Disney Studios after his return. He perfected the studio's seamless integregation of animation and live action ("Song of the South"), invented xerography for "101 Dalmatians" so the spots could simply be photocopied onto the cels instead of hand-painted, and with what is now Walt Disney Imagineering developed many of the Disneyland rides and attractions in the 1960's. As a lifelong Disney fan, Iwerks' contribution to Walt's success is not lost on me!

Wow...I never knew that Mickey had a co-creator...

And yes, Ash, I believe that Mickey would love to meet up with him again...

I haven't really commented a lot on your stuff because of how busy I've been, but this one stood out to me. If there's one thing you're good at doing, Ash, it's making stuff really stick to ya. God bless, and keep on rocking!

P.S. - My girlfriend and I are celebrating our one-year anniversary on Friday, the 22nd. I don't think it's possible for either of us to forget your personal gift to her on her birthday. I hope I never sound old or repetitive constantly bringing up what you did in April, but I thank you once again. I bid thee Godspeed in all your endeavors.

Really an unjustly forgotten genius in animation.
Even his non Disney creations like Flip the Frog are hard to see.

Isn't he even credited with creating Walts famous signature?

👍: 1 ⏩: 1

KicsterAsh In reply to Rabbette [2013-11-19 04:55:39 +0000 UTC]

Creating his signature? I don't remember that being in any book I've read thus far.
I remember Walt had asked him how he should sign his name, in three different ways, and Ub said "Walt Disney" sounded better. But I don't ever recall him creating it.
