This photo really reminds me of a print done by one of the students in my photo class last semester. She was a 30+ woman who photographed the punk scene in Houston and she was one of the sweetest people I've ever met.
Have you ever tried playing with a Holga?

It's a toy camera that created an interesting vignetting effect around the edges, and a little bit of distortion, since it has a plastic lens. It might be more difficult (and expensive!) to work with if you don't have access to your own lab, but I think you, and it, could become great friends...

I don't know if it sounds selfish or silly, but one of my main goals in life is for my photos of KC shows to be used in a book about the punk scene 20 years down the road.
I've never heard of the Holga...I usually work in digital, but I'm always down with learning about crazy cameras.

i could definitely see these shots in a book like that. I was just thinking about how these images remind me of the photos documenting the seattle grunge scene from the late 80's/early 90's.

No way does that sound silly...subcultures, especially ones that aren't in New York or LA, don't get documented NEARLY enough. Digital is kind of a double-edged sword since it's easy to take pictures, but people often don't print them out or archive them...
Another thing you could try out for digital SLR's is the Lensbaby...it's kind of pricey, but you can find them on Ebay for significantly less and they give REALLY cool results.

This photograph is great for four reasons
1. you capture a personality quite nicely
and 2. that personality represents a larger movement.
3. the composition draws you in-
4. it is honest
