Description Slowly getting back into 40k after the release of the Primaris boxed sets.
Really like how the new models look, couldn't resist and had to dust off my Red Scorpions bits to jump into the new line

Mixed technique using mainly airbrush and detail brushes. Enjoy

What was your process with the bolters? Colors used? I haven't seen red scorpions use the red bolter casings before...but I love it. It adds some contrasting color to the scheme that I think it needs.Β

So... bolter process... aside from assembling them and drilling the barrels?Β Β
I did these minis in pre-assemblies and kept them together with blu-tac for some of the airbrushing sessions, but the arms were kept so that I could paint the bolters easily and glue everything together at the end to give the finishing touches. Onto colors! For metallics - Leadbelcher, Ironbreaker, Runefang Steel, shaded with Nuln Oil and a little highlight with the old Mithril Silver, all from Citadel. For the magazine - Coal Black (from P3) and highlighted with Citadel Hawk Turquoise, ammunition has a bronze base, gold highlight and shaded with the old Citadel Chestnut Wash (same process used for the eagle). For the bolter - Mechrite Red, highlighted with Evil Sunz Scarlet and Trollslayer Orange, all from Citadel. For the front grip and belts - Calthan Brown, edge highlights done with Kommando Khaki (also Citadel). The rivet heads received a white dot to bring them out a bit, and the parchment actually turned out way darker than what I intended (the idea was to use a pale flesh color, wash it with a flesh wash and highlight the edges with the same flesh base and some white again, before doing the writing with a thin Copic marker).
I do love the rather dark color scheme of the Red Scorpions, and how the yellow trims break the monotony, but I use both red and green to add some more contrast and make the miniatures more interesting (which is why you can see green pouches on their belt and some green details on the bases). When I started my Marines project a few years ago the Badab War books just came out, and I fell in love with the Siege Vanguard army list. Apparently traditionally it is the 3rd company of a chapter that serves as a siege company, but the Red Scorpions paint scheme doesn't have any company markings the way other codex chapters do (or rather I couldn't find anything in the reference material available to me). Bolters are mostly black, though some of the artwork shows thin red stripes on the weapons; red is the color of the 3rd company, and I found the idea of the stripes really cool, but I was lazy and also not very confident in my painting skills at the time, so I just painted the bolters red, and now I just paint them red to keep the look consistent.
Man that was a wall of textΒ  Β
