jormungandr, jormung, jormungand, jormungander...eh, it's all the same as long as you've got approximately the right letters. i've never seen it spelled the same way twice, tell ya the truth. my snakie is sort of based on him, though, so good job for noticing! ^^

That's a very creative design. It reminds me of the Ouroboros, and I particularly like the way you have it coiling in and out of itself. It almost looks like it would make a good ring or earring, kind of like a puzzle ring.

Kielrae In reply to Panamatt [2008-08-03 17:08:17 +0000 UTC]

yes, exactly! in fact, it's sort of inspired by a lot of snake legends. did you know that every major culture and/or religion has a legend that prominently features a snake? the same goes for dragons. why do you think humans seem to have a common interest in large scaly things?

Panamatt In reply to Kielrae [2008-08-03 21:14:33 +0000 UTC]

I remember once watching a bit of a documentary on the origins of dragons in mythology, because you're right, they are present in almost every culture. One of their ideas was that homo sapiens' primordial enemies were primarily snakes, birds of prey, and large felines. Features of each of those animals are present in dragons, particularly western dragons.

One could say that we have incorporated pure awesome, the things that humans truly admire in animals, and put them into mythical beasts like dragons, griffins, and so on and so forth.

In this case, I was just in awe of the intertwining pattern.

Kielrae In reply to seltaya [2008-08-02 01:40:54 +0000 UTC]

it had something to do with that. it was actually inspired by jormungandr, the massive serpent of nordic legend that was said to encircle the world, eating its own tail.

seltaya In reply to Kielrae [2008-08-02 03:52:19 +0000 UTC]

Yes! The roots of the world tree, what was it called? Yggdrasil, that's it. I love norse mythology. I love all mythology, actually. I mentioned asimov a while back I think, but did I mention that the greeks probably invented robots? Hephaestus, the smith of the gods, had two metallic helpers to aid him in his forge.

Kielrae In reply to seltaya [2008-08-02 15:48:40 +0000 UTC]

and of course there was daedalus! OOH there was an article in the paper yesterday about the antikythera mechanism. the scientists built a computer model of it which reconstructed 37 gears, and they found out that in addition to predicting eclipses, it counted down the time until the olympic games. pretty cool for a device built in 80 b.c., huh?

Kielrae In reply to seltaya [2008-08-02 16:55:29 +0000 UTC]

well, okay, daedalus was a myth. but the antikythera mechanism is quite real. i've seen it.

seltaya In reply to Kielrae [2008-08-02 17:09:41 +0000 UTC]

Very true. Copernicus built a similar device I believe.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kielrae In reply to seltaya [2008-08-02 17:12:20 +0000 UTC]

yeah, he built a lot of them. but the antikythera was special because it was the first computer EVER. and it wasn't even the size of a room like our first computer...

i think it was built by a guy named geminedes or something. gemin-something...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

seltaya In reply to Kielrae [2008-08-02 18:18:07 +0000 UTC]

Gemini is the constellation of the twins. I'm not sure it was a computer. Technically, a computer is a device that logically or mathematically manipulates data according to a specific set of instructions. The antikythera doesn't quite count. Sorry.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kielrae In reply to seltaya [2008-08-03 17:49:53 +0000 UTC]

you could do stuff like set it to a certain date and it would tell you when the next full moon would be. it did manipulate input data, just not electronically. the scientists called it a computer....

and i realize that gemini is a constellation. in fact, it's my sign. that's how i remembered the first part of the inventor's name, because it started with the same three syllables.

seltaya In reply to Kielrae [2008-08-03 20:23:06 +0000 UTC]

I guess when you put it that way it could be a computer. Debatable. So who invented the ankythera if it wasn't daedalus?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kielrae In reply to seltaya [2008-08-04 01:09:26 +0000 UTC]

daedalus was mythical. i'm telling you, it was the gemin-something dude!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

seltaya In reply to Kielrae [2008-08-04 01:20:31 +0000 UTC]

It was probably either hipparchus or archimedes. It's been dated to around 150 B.C.
