Description Work in progress
(my own art will be added later)

A new project I'm working on
I see a lot of people are not clear on what a quagga is or where they lived or that they are actually zebras and not horse/zebra hybrids

All my research is done with the Quagga Project site - www.quaggaproject.org and a little of wikipedia and of course from museums from around the world, the info here are not based of my personal views but on science and facts

Oh and if anyone know any info on the other two photographs please let me know even if they didn't survive till today it will still be great to know what happened to them

Sorry I don't know horse terms that well
What are Solid points?
Is it something to do with solid colours? hehe

Ha ha, no worries! I was just referring the body parts which were not striped, but a solid dark color.

I should add that next to the tutorial hehe
Here's a ref of my character to give an idea
[link]
Some have a lighter shade others darker, even came across one that has a little reddish tint to it
but the 'brownish' colour stops at the base of their legs and tail then it turn cream or white

Hope this helps

so I can feature them later
(I'm going to make a comic - the quaggas should be able to be featured there,

thanks a lot for showing me the group

Are these animals extinct? It seems to me that too many species are going too quickly these days and no one notices... I remember a few years ago the last jaguar in North America had been shot and killed by an Arizona Fish & Game warden to protect a ranchers cattle. The story got all of 30 seconds air time and Jaguars now only exist in Central and South America, where they are also on the decline. There is no plans to reintroduce the species to North America, I guess we are happily rid of them .

Kihara-Quagga In reply to DanteSangreal [2012-06-19 08:23:15 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean, the same thing happened to the British Wolf.
The same species of wolf are returning quit well on the main land but NOT on the British isles (water barriers of course) , but I heard rumors of people who want to capture and reintroduce wolves back somewhere in the Scottish mountains but the local farmers don’t seem to be very happy about that

DanteSangreal In reply to Kihara-Quagga [2012-06-19 08:46:30 +0000 UTC]

I'd ask them if they'd like humans to be extinct... Because that's what all the environmentalism and conservationism is about. Saving species within the ecosystem is a byproduct. An awesome one but still... once we have wiped out everything wild on the planet were dead. Bee populations are on the decline... and once we lose them its finished. So these ranchers that want to kill the deer for eating the grass their cows eat and farmers afraid of wolves eating their sheep really need to be asked... Are you ok with saving your own ass? Or should we just write you off with the dodo?
Just my

Actually they are not related to the Okapi at all
although at first glance it seems like it hehe
They were a pure sub species of plain zebra

Hi^^ I have got one more question^^' hihi
Are quagga's brown with white stripes?
or are the brown with a white neck and head and brown stripes??

I feel supid to ask, but I have got a quagga character and everytime when I draw her I am curious about it^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kihara-Quagga In reply to DikkeBobby [2012-06-19 12:00:08 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the late reply

Interesting question , lets start with breeding (evolution) history of the Quagga

As you know the quagga is a subspecies of Plain zebra and a zebra is white with black stripes
When the quagga broke off from the main species Plain Zebra they started to lose their stripes at the back.
Their black stripes turned brown and their white base turned creamy or light brown
So it seems to have a lighter base with darker markings
Some Quagga stripes also broaden to give the illusion of white stripes on a brown base

Now zebra/quagga behavior
Besides sent zebra identify each other through stripe pattern and because Quagga was so closely related I believe they did the same
So the stripes and patterns depends on the individual and also how humans’ eyes react to the pattern
Some quagga even had spots on their backs!

Here’s some Zebra stripe and pattern mutations - [link]

Different individual quagga markings

For example - [link]
It’s very difficult to see if its neck is creamy with brown stripes or brown with creamy stripes

But with others it seem to be a bit more clear

Like with this one – [link]
It seem to have a brown base with lighter markings (mussel was died black with restoration-not natural colour)

But in others like this one - [link]
It seems to have a lighter base with dark markings

Oh and keep in mind those quagga specimens are very old and on some of them their fur faded horribly
[link]

Hope this helps

Roleplay is when two or more people write short stories
to one another where their characters interact with each other
Don't worry I'm still new to roleplaying to
and haven't done it yet lol

BUT I would love to do a collab! never done that before, if you are interested
Oh and before I forget here's Kihara's new ref sheet

Yay! I love to do a collab, never done one before,
How does it work?
and can we use our quagga characters?
if you like

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DikkeBobby In reply to Kihara-Quagga [2012-08-01 19:44:04 +0000 UTC]

a collab is a drawing made by 2 or more persons. Somebody makes the sketch, the other makes the lineart, the other colours it etc. You can upload the WIP on DA if you finish your part or we can send the psd/sai file by mail and than we are able to change the layers. Before you start you devide(?) the things. For example:
- Sketch : Kihara-Quagga
- Lineart: Dikkebobby
- Colouring: Kihara-quagga
- Shading: DikkeBobby
- Highlights: Kihara-quagga
and if we like to
- Background sketch: DikkeBobby
- Detailed Background sketch: Kihara-quagga
- Background: DikkeBobby
- Detailes and last things: Kihara-quagga

The easiest thing to do is sending the files by mail, but if you don't like that we could upload every part on DA.

I hope you understand what I mean^^'

Cool! That really easy and sounds real fun!
So lets start from the beginning
So what will be our idea for the collab?
Maybe our quagga characters having a fun run togher
or something completely different, what do you think?
I'm open for any ideas

Oh! almost forgot I only have Photoshop hope thats okay
and I think email wil be best if the files aren't to big

I can do a quick sketch of my idea and upload it for you
Love to hear your comments and ideas on it

Beledra [2012-05-29 07:19:07 +0000 UTC]

I like it, but I have one question about the color, when I have seen taxidermy quaggas, the shape color, even the pattern varies a lot from one animal to another, and lot of them have not the stripès only in the neck and head, and some of them don't have black color at all.
Which would be the most accurate color pattern for a quagga?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kihara-Quagga In reply to Beledra [2012-05-29 08:09:00 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, colour
(planning on adding this topic in part 3)

Time for Taxidermy
Unfortunately the taxidermy in those days were a bit crude and a lot of the quagga mounts we have today are losing their fur and colour, I call it dead fur
I was lucky enough to have seen a trophy kudu next to a live one and the fur changes dramatically after death even today!
The colours are way off after an animal has died compared to a living one, few Taxidermists are skilled enough to save the furs colour
Some actually die them the colour they need or want

Your best bet will be paintings and understanding evolution/selective breeding
(The Quagga Project is have way there)

First of quaggas do not have white heads with black stipes over them, it’s an artist mistake made from the original photographs
Quaggas are brownish and their stripes are brown too but only thicker and give the elution of white stripes
Good example - [link]
(the black stripes here are actually dark brown, might be a photo or scan error)
This is the best illustration I could find - [link]
And the best mount would be - [link]
(its snout was not black, they recently restored it but made an error, its snout was actually dark brown)
Hope this helps

Thank you very much for the long explanation, I enjoy it!

I've always have interest in this sub species, and I've seen the quagga progect, but I had doubts about the result of colors in their specimen reconstruction, because all their animals are really pale if you compares them to the taxidermy ones. Thanks for the link to the paintings from that years.

I'll be waiting for the next parts of your tutorial. ^_^
